CPAP Peer-to-Peer Support - Paying it forward

Post by MotherT » Sun Mar 21, 2021 11:32 pm

:D :) :P  :D :) :o :P

You see it here on CPAPtalk.com every day. Someone here who has success in their sleep apnea therapy helps another someone...who's a new PAP user, or one who's still struggling.

The Goodman Family started this forum years ago before all others becoming the first sleep industry business committed to Internet communication, patient education, an information library, and the formation of a strong sleep apnea community. Pioneering, indeed. The family has definitely paid it forward, and thousands upon thousands of us have received needed support.

Unfortunately, not everyone who needs support can access this cutting-edge forum. Some people who are in need may not have Internet access or perhaps not know how to use Internet technology, but phone access is nearly always possible. However, using the phone to communicate may raise a concern for mentors who do not wish for their number to be revealed via caller ID.

Enter the AWAKE Peer Mentor Program, sponsored by American Sleep Apnea Association -- sleepapnea.org. The program is free and is based on research by Sairam Parthasarathy, MD, and the team at the University of Arizona.

  • Phone numbers are not revealed to mentors nor mentees through the platform ASAA uses
Mentors and Mentees are both welcome to be part of the free program
Mentors may be eligible for a $50 gift for paying it forward
Peers are matched based on gender and age

What does a Peer Mentor do?
After reviewing a manual and completing online training modules, a Mentor will periodically receive phone calls from patients needing telephone support to help with their PAP issues.

Patients often need assistance with:
•How to overcome the hurdles of PAP therapy
Tips for improving therapy with their machine and mask
How to navigate their treatment pathway with their Equipment Provider/Doctor
[/list]

Mentors also provide:
A POSITIVE and COMPASSIONATE role model for Community members in need
First-hand experience to help patients succeed and achieve better life outcomes

Until every person suffering from sleep apnea is treated, let's ALL help raise awareness and pay forward a compassionate deed!
