OT--Needle phobia vs covid control

Post by chunkyfrog » Mon Mar 08, 2021 2:57 pm

" Trypanophobia is the extreme fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles. Despite the fact that an estimated 10% of Americans struggle with this phobia, it was not recognized as a specific phobia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) until 1994.1 Though specific to medical needles, this disorder is commonly referred to as “needle phobia” by the general public."
Unfortunately, this affects many medical personnel, and may be a roadblock to herd immunity.
It took me several days to get over my own hangup and use insulin for the first time.
So, folks who is ready to confess they are holding back because the TV stock footage
shows monster needles, when the real ones are quite small--and barely felt?

I have always hated the thought of needles. In 2008 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes so I figured it was time to get over my fear. Every time I went to get my labs done I would watch the needle go in my arm and the blood draw. This went fine for years and Then it didn’t. So now I just don’t watch but my anxiety builds up so much each time to a level darn near panic.
This morning we got in the vaccine line and I started with the anxiety. Didn’t feel nuttin.

I was talking to an ex-news producer last week. She said when she was in news, they would never show a needle. She's disappointed TV news producers are doing it now.

Here are Pfizer's needle size instructions.

BTW, I just looked at the CDC statistics. Over 60 million people have received one or more doses.

And I think I'm weird because I don't have a problem getting them, but hate to see other people have to - though have otherwise e.g. taken notes in the OR while procedures were done.

the news i watch doesn't seem to show any particularly large needles. while i don't have any phobias, i don't actually watch while the needle goes in. so i reckon i'm okay.

blood draws? that's another matter and i often feel light headed during that.

BUT when all is said and done, i'm ready for the "fauci ouchie"!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Perhaps trypanophobia is the real reason for anti-vaxxers,
because the "reasons" they give don't make any sense at all.

Awful phobia to have because almost everyone will eventually have to deal with needles in their life. I wonder what they think about having a breathing tube shoved down your throat because you didn't take the vaccine when it was available and now you can't breathe.

I don't mind getting a shot at all, but can't stand watching other people get one. Needless to say, watching the news has become uncomfortable. Do they not realize that they are freaking out people, and it's not going to help with getting people to accept the vaccine?

Anyone here old enough to recall getting vaccinations with the device shown below? It was a great way for the military to deliver many shots efficiently in a short a time, just don't move or flinch when the trigger was pulled. I'm truly glad these went out of existence.

I don't like needles and I just look away as it's given. Like a flu shot, the Covid vacs is an Intramuscular injection which means the injection needs to reach into deep muscles where the blood flow can circulate it quicker.

Getting my first jab this Friday the 12th at local hospital center. Wife is getting hers on the 25th. Appointments in Massachusetts are not easy to find and get set up.

Been there. Done that. 52 years ago. Some GI about 6 or 8 guys ahead of me flinched at the wrong time. A perfect example of what NOT to do. I held real still when it was my turn. Wish the guy pulling the trigger was a little steadier... Watched some pass out a few minutes later. I resolved then and there that I was never going to let them do that to me again. Ever. Fortunately that was the only time we were given no option.
I'm RETIRED 8) Quit asking me to do stuff

If it is any relief for those fearing the needle, Gramps and I never felt it. We had to ask if they actually injected the vaccine. Gramps received two doses of Moderna. I received two doses of Pfizer. Four doses - no pain from the needle.
