150 Nights In

Post by Greenpepper » Sat Feb 20, 2021 10:59 am

Hi ! New to the forum. Started with CPAP/APAP last September. Probably needed it years ago , but gonna just look forward only.

After 150 days, my readings (from the machine ) are :
AHI 1.8
AI 1.7
CAI 1.4

Pressure - 9.4 (machine range setting is 5-15)
Leak = 10 L/m
About 15 days each month, my AHI readings generally are between 0.0 - 0.7, the rest of the month generally between 1.0 - 2.5, and usually 4 -5 days of between 2.5 - 5.5. Above that is rare.

I was a long time snorer, not all night, and of varying intensity. Mostly mild/moderate, but occasionally earth shaking (esp. allergy season). My wife has never heard me snore even once since I started with the machine.

If I am reading the above right, my centrals are 1.4, AI is 0.3 , and hypopnea = 0.1 ??? If so, the obstructive element looks basically eliminated ?

The centrals are certainly related to muscle tension I would say, which I have some issues with. Not 100% maybe but definitely a relationship there. My breathing patterns while awake are probably not ideal either I would guess.

I do feel more rested, more energy , in general. No overnight miracles, but there was an immediate difference, and I think slowly improving over time.

I'm aware of the OSCAR software - I haven't set it up - but I wondered if I should be overly concerned about the central readings ? They look to be 78% of my overall events but seemed low enough that I wasn't sure if it was worth pursuing.

We consider a few 'centrals' on falling asleep and just prior to waking as 'sleep-wake junk', not to be worried about... only if there are lots of clusters all night.

Not enough centrals to worry about even if every single one was a real asleep central which I doubt is the case anyway.

It's normal to have a few centrals here and there anyway....like it's normal to have what is called a sleep onset central.

We don't even think about worrying unless centrals number over 5 per hour consistently night after night.

OK, thanks much ! Good to know.
I wasn't aware of the onset / wake element.
The central number seemed low and I figured it shouldnt be an issue. But obstructive events strike me as just a practical problem, that can be attacked many ways. Central events have this mysterious, slightly unnerving vibe (in my imagination I guess) .

Think of centrals as pauses between breaths that last 10 seconds or more. You probably pause your breathing for at least 10 seconds many times throughout the day. During the night, when you're awake or half-awake, you may do the same thing. Nothing to worry about.
