Exhalation Vents in Mask are loud! Help!

Post by Skodobah » Mon Mar 12, 2007 10:46 am

I've been on the Swift nasal pillows for one year, and my only complain (particularly my husband's complaint) is that the exhalation vents are LOUD when the machine ramps up to my titration (13). I am at my wits end... is there a mask that is more quiet? It doesn't have to be nasal pillows... just something so I can sleep and not have a nightmare husband next to me, unable to sleep!

Or should I try an APAP unit? Just wondering if that emits less exhalation noise pressure through the mask.

Thank you for your help!

I am actually doing a comparison test right now between Swift and OptiLife. Yes, the Swift is very noisy and the OptiLife is a 100% quieter.
You should give it a try, not sure if the pressure is suitable for the OptiLife because I am currently an 8 and I was told that some nasal masks are useless at higher pressure.

I found both the Opus and Optilife to be very quiet especially compared to my ComfortCurve which has a habbit of whistling if moisture gets trapped in the vents.

Those nasal prong interfaces are the noisiest interfaces you can select. If you want something that is SILENT look at the Somnotech Soyala nasal mask.

I've heard about the Soyala... how much of a change would that be from using pillows? At this point, I want all the quiet I can get, and if I have to go to a nasal mask I'll go. Is the Soyala comfortable?

I am at a pressure of 13 and pillow mask (swift) is just fine at that pressure.

You are correct.

I did say some pillow may not work with a higher pressure. I also mentioned that OptiLife may work or not, and that I am not sure.

If it helps, the OptiLife worked for me at 17.

I think I'm gonna spring for either Optilife or Opus, after reading everything and hearing your opinions of the masks. I'll try the nasal mask if either of these pillows systems don't work.

First time I am responding to a post like this-
I had same problem with Swift- but it is most comfortable for me-

SO here is a tidbit I learned around here- seems to help me-
cut a piece of a fabric I think called tolle [spelling?]

it is a very fine lace - it cost me like 75 cents for smallest piece at walmart-
i cut a piece about 2 inches by i inch and just put it in part of swift under your nose-
makes it quieter and doesnt seem to affect anything else- worth a try--

You know I never thought of that but it seems like a good idea.

The Soyala or SomnoPlus are the quietest masks on the market (the manufacturer claims). I don't hear a sound from them. No wooshing, just the sound of my machine.

Swift vent noise

Post by bunker » Mon Mar 12, 2007 9:35 pm

Following on from the tulle fabric, I use a piece of the mesh bags that oranges come in about as long as the swift tube and 2cms wide which I roll up alittle and poke in the end of the assembled Swift barrel before inserting the hose. Seems to cut down the turbulance and makes it real quiet.Mask still vents fine.

Some vintage Ted Nugent cranked at about 300 watts ought to drown out all noise from any mask

My ears are still ringing from the 78' tour
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

I got experience now with swift, CL2 (simple cushion), optilife, soyala.

From my experience -

Swift is the noisiest.

Soyala is the quietest. With the Soyala I don't hear the machine rev up and down as cflex comes in. I don't hear every breath like on Swift.

I would say optilife is quieter than CL2 (simple cushion) but I got other issues with it. They are close and neither is as noisy as Swift even with a sound buffer inside (small nylon net or guaze), nor as quiet as the Soyala.

I run 8 to 10 in APAP mode.
