Apnea connection to fluid retention

I am almost afraid to post this as another person did and they were made fun of instead of helping with the problem. I do have appreciate a good laugh though.

Since on Sleep Apnea with a fairly moderate 6 setting on my machine,full face mask and humidifier turned up to the highest due to a dry mouth and Colorado air. Been on it since 9 1 2006 and have lost 30lbs on weight watchers.

Question is I too have been experiencing a bloated and hard tummy. Rings that I have wore for years are to tight to get on. I measured my waist before the diet and it is now 2" larger. Asked primary physician and she said she did not think that apnea would cause that kind of problem. She knows nothing about sleep apnea accept who ever educated her on sleep studies. She did not know how to fill out prescription for the equipment and the provider helped her.She did increase my fluid meds and that has not helped.

Any ideas?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with, and can cause, fluid retention" I copied this comment from a website....the rest was medical jorgon that was incomprehensible to me but if you google sleep apnea and fluid retention you can find some stuff. Surprised me so I checked because I too have been on WW and although I have trouble restricting salt i am not losing what I think I should and blame the fluids.

Are you saying that you think having sleep apnea has caused you weight gain? I ask because I have put on almost 17 pounds this past year and was just diagnosed a few months ago with sleep apnea. It doesn't seem like a regular weight gain, most of it in my stomach. Almost like I have bloated up. My belly's not hard however, it actually feels mushy. I eat very healthy, always have, and work out 3 to 5 times a week.


I am hoping using Cpap will help me lose what I have gained.

I am so happy to see someone post about this subject.

I too have been having trouble with fluid retention. My Doc told me that "all women your age" have this problem.

This to me is totally unacceptable. I started an exercise program in Oct /06 doing Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds workouts. I started with 1 Mile, then worked up to 2 mile and now do 3 miles daily. I have lost absoutely NO pounds and NO inches.

I eat less than 1500 calories a day and many day much less than that. It is a real struggle. I am not much over weight, perhaps 10 lbs, but it is all around my middle and I want to get rid of it.

I hate being told that nothing can be done because of my age. I work hard during my workouts and would really love to see some results. I do feel better since starting to exercise so that is a plus.

It would be most interesting to see if this and cpap therapy have any relation. My therapy is going extremely well. Never go above 1.7 AHI and that is on a bad night. I have many nights with 0 apneas. However, I still wake up frequently through the night with aches and pains but am also told that "age" is the problem. I am only 64 years young and really hate being called old.

Wow, what a coincidence, I am a guy on WW since early Feb. this year, and lately after losing 10 pounds I suddenly started gaining. I was eating Spec K cereal as a snack until I saw it has high sodium. As a matter of fact I started tracking my sodium intake and was surprised at the amt. pf sodium in so much. Milk, bread, cheese, snacks etc. I am trying to maintain my sodium level to below 2400 mg. I write down what I eat and the sodium levels at each meal. BTW, my BP is perfect my doc said for a 63 year old guy. All my other numbers are ideal and no diabetes. I wonder if I ran the CPAP without water for a few nights would there be a difference in the slight swelling in my feet and wrist?

I would think that some of the "experiencing a bloated and hard tummy" is being caused by aerophagia -- the swallowing of air. Click on the blue aerophagia at the bottom of this post to see definition.

I slept without humidifier last night. Straight through the blower. Wole up just once with a dry throat otherwise fine. I will keep trying it. Still have slight edema in left foot.

I feel so much better after starting Cpap that I just want to LIVE LARGE and enjoy life, and with that I have a bigger appetite than ever!

I feel my Xpap use has helped me greatly in my fight against my chronic edema and fluid retention. The main thing cpap treatment can help with, is the effect OSA has on the kidneys and heart functions. I feel that low sodium intake and effective pap treatment has greatly helped my ability to control my edema of the feet and legs. After about 4 months of use I went from having almost fluid leaking edema of the feet/legs to normal size legs and feet with minimal swelling here and there depending on my diet behavior and sleep hygiene. I also have stopped taking the diuretics.
