First night on CPAC - not good

Post by swall » Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:27 am

Hi all,

I just got my CPAP yesterday and tried to sleep with it last night. I keep pushing the mask into the pillow which either causes leaks or blocks the exhaust. I finally pulled it off at midnight and fell asleep for a total of 2 hours before I woke up sweaty and on high alert. I am so tired of being tired. I have mild apnea, I wake 59 times a hour and snore but do not have a serious O2 drop. Any suggestions would be welcome. Oh I have a Breeze nasal pillow mask and a Cflex with heated humidifier and a setting of 7.

Hi swall,

Sounds like you might be a stomach sleeper like I am. We have the hardest time of all finding masks we can use. I personally like the TwilightNP nasal pillows (made by Invacare). They seem to have been "made" for stomach sleepers. The actual pillow part that touches your face is soft, and doesn't get pushed aside. Additionally, the exhaust is up high enough that you don't block it with your pillow, even if you bury your face in it. Most insurance companies cover 2 masks per year or more - If I were you, I would see if I couldn't get my CPAP provider to get me one of these. If not, they're available online from CPAP.com, and are not expensive as far as masks go (under $100, I think).

Others have also had success with the ComfortLite2 for stomach sleeping. Good luck!

Machine: M-Series Auto
Mask: Headrest
No humidifier
On the hose since 2005.

Patience is the key.

You have the best mask available, imho.

It may take several WEEKS to adapt and adjust to the new stranger in bed with you.
Patience!!

Click on yellow light and read.
Review several forums and READ.

Wish you had an APAP.

Rough first night

Hi. First night blues, heh? In addition to other suggestions, just want to mention some have reported that different style bed pillows helped. Can't say what would work for you, but some that have been mentioned are the Shapeable pillow from Target, memory foam pillows, and the PAPPillow.

Are you stabilizing the headgear with any additions? I use a stretchy sport headband to help it stay in place. Some use the leg of a pair of pantyhose tights tied around it. This would not stop the exhaust from getting blocked by your pillow, but should reduce leaks from the nosepiece shifting.

Although your oxygen levels may not drop a lot, if your sleep stages are disrupted by your apneas, nothing feels "mild" about that. Sounds like your issues are things that can be worked through. Hope you are soon getting restful restorative sleep.

Kathy

I want to encourage you to hang in there.

In real estate it is Location, Location, Location that is crucial. In xPAP, it seems to be Mask, Mask, Mask. Of course it is way more than that, but the right mask (along with the right "fixes" to it) are very important.

As a side sleeper, I am now using the ComfortLite 2 with some success. I do tie a pantyhose tights leg around my head and the hose coming down the front of my face to the CL2 nasal pillows. That has helped a lot. I think I am going to try the Twilight NP that many others have recommended.

I got a Target Shapable pillow that I personally have not found to be very shapable, but a lot of people love them. I'm now using a good memory foam pillow that works pretty well. Lots of people swear by buckwheat-filled pillows as being the best thing since sliced bread.

Keep researching on this forum for ideas and instructions. You may have to tolerate feeling worse and more exhausted for awhile until you find the right combination of things. In the long run, your stamina will pay off.

Good luck.
