Review of New Infinity 481 Interface

Post by 53now » Thu Mar 10, 2005 9:29 am

Fisher & Paykel's new Infinity 481 Direct Nasal Interface is finally available to the general public. After some manufacturing delays......This tiny lightweight interface has finally hit the market. BUT will it be a "Hit" or just another "Miss".
I really wonder sometimes how these companies test their products. Do they actually use humans or test dummies. I don't think Fisher & Paykel used either one in testing this product.
*****Positive and negative
I like the "Microgear" headstrap...a single thin flexible strap that goes around the back of the head Ahhhh just what I've been looking for !! It stayed put all night long ..no problems here.
The Air Diffuser is also another positive. It was very quiet...... The mask comes fully assembled ... adjust the head strap and that's it.....no problems here.
The problems begin when you "hook up" to your machine. The weight of the hose places too much torque on the nosepiece. The slightest movement of your head causes everything to sag, thus causing seal problems. The mask has a "Ball & Socket" device built in that should rotate as you move around. BUT it doesn't always perform as intended
Hose placement is absolutely critical when using this interface. Over-the-top seems to be the only way it will work. Here again... the weight of the hose can cause some problems.... too much slack in the hose causes the nosepiece to "torque downward" .
In closing......this interface has some good points AND I will try to "rig up" something overhead (just because I love that tiny headstrap) However, this mask is not going to be a big hitter. Although it will give me something to "tinker with".
I charge a 15% Lab Rat fee for all those interested in buying this mask. (only teasing) My advice ......save your money

Rich,

Great review! you confirmed my suspicions. Sorry to hear you've purchase yet another interface that leaves something to be desired. One other tweak you might try is securing your hose to a chest strap. You may be able to leave just enough slack between the chest strap and the interface to minimize any rotation of the chamber. Let me know if you try this. I'd love to know if it worked.
Sincerely,

Were the pillows uncomfortasble? I'm using a Breeze now and have seen a close-up of the Infinity - looks like the pillows are inserted further into the nostril.
