Oscar not working

Post by Josiah » Sun Jun 28, 2020 5:38 pm

A couple of weeks ago I installed the latest version of OSCAR. While I had used Sleepy Head quite a bit back in 2018 I gradually stopped because ResMed's MyAir was giving my daily AHI which I was happy with. Then a couple of weeks ago I started using OSCAR and had no problems. Then an incident occurred which I wasn't paying attention to. It may have involve putting the SD card back in the ResMed 10. Clearly if I remembered the details of what happen it would help but I just don't. After that every time I ran OSCAR I wouldn't get any results beyond the date June 2nd. I looked at the files on the SD drive and they included file names with all the later dates up to today. In desperation I uninstalled OSCAR and installed V1.1.1 tried again and no luck.

Well, I can't be sure what happened either. The database is not changed when you uninstall and re-install OSCAR. So if there was a problem before you uninstalled OSCAR, it would likely still be there after you installed the new version.

When you put the SD card back in the AutoSet, the SD card should not be locked. With the AirSense 10 models, it is not necessary to lock the card when inserting it into the computer, so you don't have to remember to unlock it when you put it back in the machine.

Here is what I suggest you try to see if it gets the results you want: go to the Profile tab and create a New Profile (using buttons on the right). All you need in the New Profile dialog is a name for the profile -- which can be anything. You can ignore the rest of the fields.

Now, import from the SD card into the new profile. Ignore the message on the Welcome page about the lock switch on the SD card -- OSCAR does not yet know that you are using a newer machine and that locking the card is not necessary.

This will import only data that is on the SD card you are using. If you have older data somewhere else, and want it included in the OSCAR reports, we can deal with that later.

Take screenshots (F12 key or View/Take Screenshot) of the Daily, Overview, and Statistics pages. Post them here and describe any problems with what you see on these pages.

I'm trying to follow your directions re new profile, When I open OSCAR I see a profile window with buttons on the right but there is a smaller window on top announcing the OSCAR release note and till I do something about that the buttons on the right are not active. so I click close on the release window which goes away and I have to enter my pw I do that an the and I get another window saying OSCAR needs to upgrade its data base at the bottom it asks if I want to proceed I click yes and some rather extensive processing takes place. Throughout all this the profile buttons remain inactive. When the update is finished I get an entirely new window announcing Welcome to ..... with the CPAP importer button and others but I've lost my opportunity to change my profile name.

OSCAR is configured to open the same profile that was last used. OSCAR updating the database suggests this was the first time OSCAR 1.1.1 was run on your database. There are two things to try:

1) Does the problem you had before still exist after you import your SD card into your existing profile? If the problem is now gone, everything is fine.

2) To follow my original steps, there is a tab in the upper left corner that says "Profile." Click on it and you will see the buttons on the right that I described to create a new profile. Create the profile, import your SD card, and post the screenshots with a description on what you want me to look at.

P.S. please check that the date, including year, is set correctly on both your CPAP machine and your computer.

I succeeded in creating two new profiles. After creating the first I proceeded to the Welcome window clicked the CPAP importer the green line flashed across and the Daily View button became illuminated I clicked it and was told there was no data. I decided to try again from scratch. I closed Oscar took the SD card out and put it back again, launched Oscar the only profile listed was my original and again I got the Oscar release note then I had to enter my pw (my new profile doesn't have a pw) then the OSCAR needs to upgrade its data base window the Welcome window I pressed the SD importer and this time the Daily View button didn't become illuminated. I checked Oscar data > profiles on my PC and it only listed my original profile somehow even though my additional profile which was Accepted and Saved never got saved in my Oscar profiles folder

I really seem to be spinning my wheels. I'm contemplating starting from scratch on a different computer that has never seen Sleepyhead or Oscar. Where can I find the most helpful instructions for starting form scratch with OSCAR?

I suspect the problem may be with the location of your data file. Let me know where it is (see my previous question) and, if that is the problem, the fix is easy.

C:\Users\jmpag\Documents\OSCAR_Data\Profiles and the only profile in that folder is the original one I had before the problem. The two I added are not in the folder

I've seen this behavior twice before, where new data would be imported and, when OSCAR was restarted, the data wasn't there. The fix process can be messy, so after telling you what is happening I'll tell you how to make a fresh start with OSCAR.

In each case, the problem was one of file system permissions. Some directories were write-protected so no data could be actually be written to disk. Instead, Windows placed the data in a temporary location. When the user closed OSCAR, the data was lost. In one case, the user had placed the data directory in the program file directory, which Windows no longer allows. That's not your problem. In the other case, the user had write-protected the Documents directory, so an OSCAR_Data directory could not be created. That's not quite the same as your problem as you already have an OSCAR_Data directory, though it may be related.

The problem could also be that the OSCAR_Data directory was created with a different Windows logon account than you are currently using. Is your jmpag account an Administrator account?

You mentioned having to enter a password. Did you password protect your SleepyHead or OSCAR profile, and is that the password being asked for? I will assume the answer is 'yes', which means that is not an indicator of your problem.

Have you installed the 32-bit or 64-bit version of OSCAR? Here are the commands you need to type to get a fresh start on either version:

First, open a command window by pressing the Windows key and "R". Type "cmd" and press Enter. This will open a command window.

For the 64-bit version of OSCAR, type these commands, pressing the Enter key after each command. Note that there are two hyphens before "datadir."

Code: Select all

c:
cd "\Program Files\oscar"
oscar --datadir OSCAR_Data2
If you have installed the 32-bit version of OSCAR, type these commands:

Code: Select all

c:
cd "\Program Files (x86)\oscar"
oscar --datadir OSCAR_Data2
This will start OSCAR and OSCAR will ask you if it should create a new OSCAR data directory named OSCAR_Data2. Respond 'yes' to that prompt and 'no' the following prompt to import Sleepyhead data (unless you want to import sleepyhead data). Then create a profile and import your SD card.

Note that a password is not required for a new profile; it's up to you whether you wish to place a password on your profile. Password protection is not very strong and easy to circumvent, so most of us do not use it.

Does this now work as expected?

First of all let me say how much I appreciate all the help you've given me. On first pass your fixes look pretty intimidating for this 85 year old. If backed into a corner I would of course try them but my cautious temperament suggests starting from scratch on a Windows 10 labtop that has no history of contact with Sleepyhead or Oscar would be a safer bet. What do you think?

Well, the "fresh start" I proposed above is certainly benign -- you're not changing anything in the system, just starting OSCAR in a slightly different way, and just for one time. Thereafter you would start OSCAR as usual by double-clicking on the OSCAR icon. And if this didn't work, I'd suggest trying the laptop instead of pursuing this machine further. I certainly didn't want to try to talk you through confirming that file system permissions are the problem, and then fixing them; that can be confusing even to skilled Windows users! (You have only eight years on me, but my career was spent working with computers.)

It occurs to me there is an even easier "fresh start" approach. Using Windows Explorer (aka File Manager), go to the Documents directory and rename OSCAR_Data to OSCAR_Old_Data. Then start OSCAR as you usually do and it will be just like OSCAR has never run and ask you if it should create OSCAR_Data. Go ahead and let it do that and see if you can now import data successfully.

If you prefer to start fresh on a different machine instead, that's entirely up to you. Which is more convenient for you in the long run? I'm happy to help with whatever route you care to take.

Yes, I am one of the OSCAR developers. In OSCAR, see Help/About/Credits, I am the second-listed developer, under my ApneaBoard name (BlueDragon wasn't available when I signed up on ApneaBoard).

I gave up on my desktop and started with a fresh download of Oscar on my laptop. Everything went swimmingly all my SD data got processed. I'm a happy camper.
