Mouth breather

Post by Coronaboy » Sun Jun 28, 2020 10:15 am

I'm a mouth breather and used to use the dreamwear nasal mask with chin strap. It was a pain to use the strap and the nasal mask so I switched to a full face mask, the resmed f20. I find I get good sealing with full face mask but I get a very dry mouth. Isn't the a full face mask to help with this issue?

I'm using a heated tube with humidity.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

It's the mouth breathing that dries out the mouth. All the full face mask does is prevent the therapy pressure from exiting out the mouth.
Some people just get a dry mouth easier than others.
The added humidity from the humidifier was never really designed to hydrate the oral cavity. It was designed to hydrate the nasal cavity which is much smaller.

We have a lot of full face mask users who complain of dry mouth and end up adding some sort of oral hydrating agent (like Biotene) to supplement the oral moisture.

So you have to either stop the mouth breathing or maybe add even more moisture by increasing the humidity setting on your machine (which may or may not give you the relief you want) or add some sort of product to your bedtime ritual to help keep the mouth moist.

Some people report that Xylimelts help. They stick to your teeth or gums and stimulate the production of saliva throughout the night.

Is the dry mouth unbearable?

I had the same issue. I increased my humidity slightly and it made it better.

Thank you all.

I tried changing the humidity and no change.

Now I wear a chin strap with full face mask again and no more dry mouth. My tongue no longer feels like sand paper in the morning.
