Hypopneas in the morning

Post by biomed traveller » Fri May 15, 2020 3:08 pm

Hi All
I'm really new (1month user). I started with Apap which did half the job but of course did not help with the centrals. Now on a Resmed Pacewave CS or ASV (last 2 weeks) my AHI is averaging around 3. Just 2 newby questions which I cannot find an answer for:

1/.My machine says AHI 3.3 total AI 1.4 but this doesn't seem to correlate in any way to Oscar 3.24AHI 1.9 Hypopnea (close I guess) Does this matter. do I have a setting not quite correct or anything??

2/. more clinical, but I have noticed if it wasn't for the last hour of my sleep I would have a near perfect score. In the last hour before waking I seem to have several close together Hypopneas 10+ this is the same as during the ramp time before the ASV kicks in but at this time it is operational so I don't know why. Can anyone explain this? My sleep clininc have said "yes we have a few people that happens too in the morning" and leave it at that. Because I'm under the 5 AHI. I'm doing a great job and they send me on my way.

It is set for EPAP 6 and PS 3-10 extra for the moment. I was 3-14 but it was like a balloon being let go in my mouth in the middle of my sleep. I tried to add a screenshot but the system says invalid format for Doc and Pdf??

It's an individual thing..I get several hypopneas during the first hour of sleep almost every night....3.3 vs 3.24 is insignificant...there is nothing you can reset.

just taking a screenshot from oscar should save the pics as .png which has no trouble using the attachment feature of the forum.

try again as the experts here will want to see your charts before they can give you sound advice.

good luck!

JPEG also works.

It's not unusual to drift in and out of sleep that last hour. Breathing becomes irregular, and the machine reports false flags. Some members can interpret this if you post a screenshot.

1/.My machine says AHI 3.3 total AI 1.4 but this doesn't seem to correlate in any way to Oscar 3.24AHI 1.9 Hypopnea (close I guess) Does this matter. do I have a setting not quite correct or anything??
Welcome! I find that the machine rounds in its own weird way (as in your 3.3 vs. 3.24). And if the AHI is 3.3 and the AI is 1.4, then the difference between the two numbers tells us there is 1.9 per hour of something that isn't apnea, namely hypopnea, which is just what Oscar says. Does this make sense?
Oscar software is available at https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/

Yes, that makes sense and thanks all for your input. I now see why the sleep person shrugs off the morning hypopneas and I now know even more on the figures on both Oscar and the machine. Looks like the new ASV is giving me approx 3AHI or lower, which is great to the Apap that was still around the 17. :D

If you disregard the two clusters of hypopnoeas which were most likely sleep/wake junk (SWJ), your AHI is 1.3 which isn't too bad. As CG stated, it is common for us to transition between sleep and wake several times prior to waking up completely, and also when first going to sleep.
