Anyone move a lot in sleep some nights?

Post by Diotima » Sun May 10, 2020 5:26 am

So lately I've noticed I've woken up and my CPAP will either be turned 90 degrees or nearly hanging off my nightstand about to fall. FYI I was in the military so many there is some background there. Having disturbing dreams seems to be the only type of dream I have.

Usually it seems to happen during my frequent and disturbing dreams. For example last night I was working security at the gate in the military and some vehicle ran the gate, overturned on something (bollards maybe), and suddenly I'm in another vehicle behind that vehicle... somehow transporting from the shack into another vehicle heading directly for the overturned vehicle. We crash and I'm yelling to stop the vehicle ...well I'll the gory details to myself once we collide driver side with the overturned vehicle. I jolt upwards in bed and my CPAP is turned sideways about to fall to the ground.

I have no idea how to manage this unless I can maybe find a longer hose or perhaps use a mask like the P30i instead of the P10.

Find a way to anchor your machine (especially if you have water in the tank) so it doesn't fall and get wrecked or flooded.

You may have to strap the machine down in some fashion.

Longer hoses are available but not in the heated hose variety so you would lose the heat if you use it.
What I would do if I wanted more length and wanted to keep my heated hose function is add this hose at the mask end of the hose.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/circad ... -cpap-tube
It will add about 18 inches and has a male/female end so no special adapters are needed. It's lightweight and very flexible which a lot of the other short hoses aren't very flexible.
Should condensation occur then I would add a hose cozy over it. Padacheek makes short hose cozies.

There are 8 ft and 10 ft hoses available....non heated of course.

Another alternative for securing the machine itself ...depending on the surface of the table you are using...some velcro stuck to the table and the bottom of the machine so it sort of locks the machine down.

I'm sorry your dreams are so disturbing, and I hope you can get some help with that, maybe from someone who specializes in PTSD. More here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-con ... c-20355967

One other thought about protecting the machine: if you used a hose cover, that would allow you to safety-pin the cover to your bottom sheet, which could stop transmission of motion from you to the machine. (Or rip your sheet, I suppose -- but during a restless period, the safety-pin thing worked for me.)

If you don't have a way to anchor your machine easily, it may be possible to anchor your hose.
I use the cozyhoze hose-minder. Instead of one command strip hook though, I have two. One closer to the machine and another closer to the head of the bed.

I've arranged it above the head of the bed. If the hose gets pulled too far, it can't go any further than the lead reel. I'd have to pull it off the wall, and that hasn't happened. If you already have some command strips and some string, you could probably jerry rig something quick and easy tonight.

In the ten-plus years I've used this method, I haven't had any machine spills. Also, if your night-stand is smooth, you could try putting some of that foamy non-adhesive drawer liner on the surface where your machine lives so it's got better purchase on the stand. If you buy a roll, you can replace any that gets old or dusty as you need.

In my sleep, I clobbered the bullfrog--but he forgives me.

You can slide a hair scrunchie over your hose and pin it to your sheet.

I'm SORRY everyone I was afraid to check back to see what people responded with. I bought a Hose holder today (Hose Buddy $49.99) and hope it solves the problem. Last night I ripped my hose from the back of the machine and woke up struggling to breath. It sucked. I'll be going over posts now and will respond as needed.

Someone sent me a PM asking if I have PTSD.. I could not respond to him for some reason he can't receive PM's. I would hesitate and say no although I have no actual diagnosis.. I do not like shrinks.

This problem didn't seem to manifest in the past year or so only recently.. no idea what changed.

I ordered this today -- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0086 ... UTF8&psc=1

I wonder if there shouldn't be a diagnosis for some form of low-grade Chronic Traumatic Stress Disorder - anxiety that comes from too many nights of waking up every few minutes from sleep apnea.

The hose buddy may be a great help.

As for Pugsy's suggestion for an 18" hose extender, I use this 18" extender tube between my heated tube and my mask, along with a home-sewn fleece hose wrap. The added hose length along with the hose buddy may help keep your machine from falling off its perch. If your nightstand is substantial and open enough, you could always use a belt or some rope/string to tie it down as Pugsy said.

We're all hoping you'll be able to find a working solution, so please let us know how things go!

Chris
