Full face mask leaking Please Help

Post by paultn » Tue May 05, 2020 12:06 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have been having issues with every time I roll on my back my Full face mask leaks from near the corners of my mouth (cheek area beside mouth corner actually).
I have tried taping and a chinstrap with no luck. it seems when my face muscles relax in that area the mask no longer seals.

This has been true on the following masks.
Resmed F20 - Touch and Air
Resmed F30 and F30i
F&P Vitera
Dream wear Full face.

I was thinking of trying an Amara View but feel it will be the same as the Dream wear full face.

I have also tried a Pad-A-Cheek on the Vitera and found it to be useless as it leaks everywhere.

My pressure is set to 15-20 in APAP mode,
And I have tried many variations of mask fitting from super overly tight to as lose as possible. I can eliminate all leaks except in each mouth corner (cheek area beside mouth corner actually)

Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this? Leaks are waking me up when I use the full face mask.

Thank you

Could be a size issue...For many FF masks if you measure borderline between sizes..go with the smaller size.

I thought this as well.

The F20 and Vitera I tried medium and large. Both leak in the same spot when my muscle relax.

Try closely watching three or four videos on youtube about adjusting and using your model mask.

Have you tried a nasal mask with a chin strap? Then you wouldn't need to maintain a seal on that region of your face.

I have been recently using the Resmed P10 pillows. I do love the mask but cannot get mouth leaks under control. Even fully taped mouth i get a lot of leaking (10% large leak in some cases) some nights it wakes me and some it doesn't.

I don't know how to stop the mouth leaks and I feel it is affecting my therapy as I have been feeling more tired since using the p10.

This. My F20 feels like it's almost too small. I usually wear medium in everything so far. And just as you say Paultn, the only place it almost doesn't fit is at the corners of my mouth. However, it doesn't leak for me, so in my case it works. Ordinarily, I'd agree with LSAT, but If everything else seals, but it's just the corners of your mouth that leak, I wonder if going to a larger size might be the key, in order to fully cover the mouth. If you go smaller, your mouth will most likely not be covered.

I don't have any firsthand experience, but the older F&P masks actually cup underneath the chin and seal differently than the masks you have tried. Maybe take a look:

I do not know if this would work, I do not remember anyone trying it. Unusual problem.
How about just taping each corner of your mouth.
With micropore paper tape. Something thin.

The mask should still seal.

Just a thought. If it does not work, back to square one.

Feel silly posting this, but I did.
With masks anything is worth a try.
I have done more than one or two things that did not work out.
And a few that did. :D

This is an interesting idea. I will give it a shot.
I also purchased an f30i so I will be playing with that as well when it gets here. Hopefully between the Vitera and the f30i I can figure out something that works well and lets me sleep through the night.

It's a DESIGN issue.
Full face masks are simply not made to fit every . single . face.
I found the only full face mask that worked with my face was a gel mask.
After a year or so, I gave up on full face masks.
