I feel very thirsty at night while using the machine

Post by cindy74 » Thu Apr 09, 2020 11:40 am

Hi Everyone,

Need help.

I am using the Dream Station AutoCpap with the Mask CPAP Machine without the humidifier. Lately, I have started feeling very thirsty at night and wake up to drink a lot of water. When I wake up my mouth, throat is very dry.

Anyone experiencing this and what's a solution?

Thank you very much,

Cindy

welcome aboard! while it's not the cure, there is something you can use to alleviate the symptoms.

xylimelts. they are a wee lozenge you situate between teeth and cheek. it's slightly tacky on the tooth side helping it to stay in place. this lozenge slowly melts during your sleep to promote saliva, you can find it on amazon or in the oral health care section of your drugstore. i have found them at cvs and rite aid. yet to see them at the grocery store.

they work a treat.

good luck!

Why aren't you using the humidifier?

You may be mouth breathing, and that affects the efficacy of your treatment because with a nasal mask, if the air is going out your mouth, you aren't getting the pressure to keep your airway open. And it really dries out your mouth!

If you think that's the case, we can give you some suggestions.

While taping the mouth shut is alarming to providers, it has been done.
A safer way to do it is with "chin up strips".
For a while, I cut my own out of wide medical tape.
To apply, you attach to the face right below the lower lip,
then pull your lower lip up over the upper lip
before securing the ends higher on the face--so you look a bit like a bulldog.
You can still breathe though your mouth, but it is awkward--and hilarious.
