Smartwater substitute during covid-19

Post by margaretoc » Fri Mar 20, 2020 4:46 pm

During cov-19 crisis, regular distilled water not available. I DO HAVE vapor distilled Smartwater (drinking water) so is that safer to use than tap water?

welcome to the zoo!

there is nothing wrong with using tap water. tap water just means cleaning the humidity tank more frequently, is all.

tap water will do no harm to your cpap machine.

good luck!

If it says distilled ...use it. When you run out, use bottled or tap water.

I have already run into this myself. Shelves bare of distilled or bottled water of any shape or size.

People....it is quite safe to use tap water. If you can safely drink it...you can use it in the humidifier.
The worst thing that will happen is if you happen to have "hard" water with a lot of mineral content then you may see some of that mineral build up residue on the inside of the water chamber.
If your water isn't very hard you may not even notice it.

If you do notice it...it's not the end of the world. Easily removed with a vinegar or lemon juice soak.
To help limit any build up you might dump any remaining water in the morning and let the water chamber air dry if you want to do that.

I repeat.....IT IS SAFE TO USE TAP WATER IN YOUR HUMIDIFIER WATER CHAMBER.
Distilled isn't even mentioned in the manuals in parts of the world other than North America...it's not that big of a deal.

No, it's no "safer" to use than tap water.

Tap water is perfectly fine to use.

I just got two gallons of distilled water delivered by Instacart in the NY City area. I placed the order on Monday; it came today, Friday! It was part of a larger grocery order. I ordered the store brand, but they substituted Poland Spring brand since the store brand was not available.

According to their website, "Smartwater" is distilled water with added electrolytes and MINERALS.
Use tap water--it is cheaper, and "might" not gunk up your tank.
MINERALS is the ingredient that turns an old toilet tank into a mini limestone cave.
And your humidifier tank into a grungy mess.
But it is cleanable--and very cheaply--vinegar and water.
-----Rinse thoroughly before refilling.

I used a smart water once when I was visiting my daughter. I forgot to fill it up before I went to bed. I decided rather than walking down the hall (yes, I am that lazy) I'd just use the rest of the smart water I had. I dumped the extra out the next morning. It didn't leave any build up or stains but I only used it the one night.

That stuff is so over-priced, I don't buy it in the first place.

When I'm in Vegas I just buy the biggest bottle of water I can find. They are all overpriced, but vegas water is nasty.

As has been said, tap water is perfectly safe. Just empty that tub every morning to avoid mineral buildup and bacteria overgrowth and refill before going to bed. ResMed says to also clean it daily, not just empty it, but some think that's a bit often. Weekly cleaning is probably OK as long as you aren't letting the residual water sit in it all day.

As an alternative to distilled water, get deionized water that is dispensed on demand. Whole Foods and some other grocers have these machines in their stores, you just provide your own container. You NEVER have to worry about a shortage, at least as long as the store is open and they are maintaining the machine. These use reverse osmosis to filter the water, along with a couple other processing techniques to purify it further. And it's cheap... about 40 cents a gallon. And it's actually more purified than distilled water is. More here:
viewtopic/t178740/Cant-find-distilled-H ... l?start=15
viewtopic/t178748/Deionized-water-vs-di ... water.html

A nice benefit to using this stuff is that you don't have to worry about cleaning as often.
