Is the new mask leaking too much?

Post by earthian » Sun Mar 01, 2020 2:51 am

Hello:
I had been diagnosed with Apnea during 2013 and have been using a CPAP machine since then. Must say it has been a life saver. Literally and in more ways than i had imagined! I currently use the Phillips Dream Station and was using the True Blue Mask till about 3 days back. I have now switched to under the nose nasal mask. I tried using the ML but it hurt my nose and hence switched to L. However, i hear noise of air escaping and have not got a good sleep yet. Is it due to improper mask fitting or nose size? ( the masks, not mine :D )

Am loading data and would be thankful of some advise. I really don't know at all how to interpret the data and would welcome some pointers in this regard too.

Thank you.

And to give a comparison, here is the data when i used the old mask True Blue (Covering the nose)

Mods: Sorry for the back-to-back posting. Please merge. Thank you.

Raise your min. pressure to e.g. 7 or 8 - it's very clear it needs more to be effective.

Thank you, Julie and apologise for the delayed response. Was travelling. Why do you say that we need to increase the minimum pressure? Could you please elaborate?

A Philips machine is slow to raise pressure and from your graphs at lower pressures you see you have snores (VS Events) and Hypopnoeas recorded. They clear when your machine finally gets up to the higher pressures. Raising the minimum to 7 or 8 will give it a head start and reduce your overall number of events

Thank you Jas. Could you tell me where i could learn how to read the sleepyhead output?

And what about the leakage rate? Is it too high?

Respironics machines machines report total leak as that top line on the leak graph.
Total leak is the mask's expected vent rate (also called intentional leak) plus any excess leak.
Total leak varies as pressure varies....more pressure equals more vent rate so we expect more total leak as the pressure increases.

Your leaks...well within acceptable limits. As long as the machine doesn't flag large leak (the LL up on the events graph) you aren't having any leaks of the magnitude to be a negative impact on the therapy itself.
Now if minor leaks are waking you up....they need to be worked on because anything that disturbs our sleep is unwanted.

I have some hints on understanding what you see in the SleepyHead tutorial thread in the Announcements section.

There's also this
http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph ... rpretation

OSCAR is based off of SleepyHead so anything evaluations are essentially the same.

I usually just concentrate on the basics....understanding pressure, AHI and leaks.
All those other graphs that SleepyHead/OSCAR shows have such a wide range of normals that they are impossible to really evaluate and besides...if abnormal what are you going to do about it anyway. Most people who would have abnormal readings will already know that they have a respiratory problem and be under a doctors care for it.
