Leak measurements, ResMed vs Phillips
I use a DreamStation CPAP with DreamWear nasal cushions. During my machine set up, the mask type was not selected (no options for that mask). So, when a leak is measured, is machine still allowing for expected mask vent leak? My husband’s ResMed Cpap measures leak differently and it’s confusing. I read that > 24L leak is considered noteworthy. Does ResMed account for the mask and exhalation vent? I’m confused about the lines on the graphs. I think one line is specific for allowable leak from the specific mask (?), but I don’t know what other lines indicate. Can anyone help us figure this out? Thanks so much.
Re: Leak measurements, ResMed vs Phillips
ResMed is the only machine that reports leak in excess only leak numbers and their line in the sand is 24 L/min. It subtracts a generic expected vent rate prior to leak reporting. You don't ever see anything but the excess leak only numbers.
All other brands of machines report leaks in terms of total leak numbers....total leak is the mask's expected vent rate plus any excess leak.
There is no static line in the sand for Respironics machines where large leak territory begins because it varies with the mask and the pressures used. Use available software and see if you ever hit large leak territory per the machine to evaluate leaks.
The top line on the leak graph....total leak.
The bottom line on the leak graph....a close approximation of excess leak only. It isn't totally 100% accurate because we aren't given a static line to calculate from and it simply varies too much.
If you aren't seeing LL flagging on the events graph...you didn't hit large leak territory.
The statistics thing on OSCAR/SleepyHead on the left....ignore it if it says you are having large leaks and you don't see any LL flags.
It uses a ResMed number for the calculations and that number won't work with a Respironics leak report.
The mask type setting on the Respironics machine has nothing to do with leak reporting at all. It's a Resistance control setting which doesn't affect leak at all.

On a Resmed, not on a Respironics.Crazytired wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 12:11 pmI use a DreamStation CPAP with DreamWear nasal cushions. Resmeds are smart enough to calculate the varying vent rate mathematically and only show you excess leak.
Respironics aren't that smart.
On Respironics, the top line is the measured total leak+vent, the bottom line on oscar is an educated *guess* at excess leak.Crazytired wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 12:11 pmDoes ResMed account for the mask and exhalation vent? if your machine isn't complaining about LL(Large Leak) then it thinks everything is fine.
Get OSCAR
