Determine sleep stage(s) from OSCAR ?

Post by Seastrike » Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:44 am

Hello to all.
Is it possible to interpret sleep stage data from the various OSCAR results ?
I'mif it's possible to understand If and When we're getting into REM, DEEP or LIGHT sleep during the night....

Any thoughts ?

Thanks, in advance.

Not with any accuracy. Since the cpap machine can't determine sleep status...it doesn't know if you are awake or asleep then there's nothing to really help us much except the flow rate graph where you can infer a nice asleep breathing rhythm but it can't really tell the sleep stages.

Some people have learned their own rhythm and can spot maybe REM stage sleep due to minor changes in the respiratory rate and flow rate but it's hit or miss until you really can spot some very minor changes that might be from REM.
The other stages...not so much.

So you can tell awake vs asleep most of the time by the flow rate (need to zoom in real close to evaluate) but can't really tell much about sleep stages.

Watch the videos here...they explain how to look for evidence of arousal/awake breathing vs asleep breathing pattern.

I have a Dreem headband, which has EEG-based sleep tracking, including for sleep stages, and I can't identify any obvious correlation with the OSCAR data.

The Zeo, and others, use sensors on the face to detect muscle and nerve impulses,
in order to determine sleep stages.
The processing can be done by off-the-shelf devices or kit form, like Arduino.
Unless these sensors can be applied properly by the user, reliable data is not available at home.
The literature that comes with wrist sensors includes a disclaimer indicating
something to the effect that it is NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE.

The Dreem 2 is an FDA-registered medical device, with five EEG sensors. The Zeo had a single EEG sensor.

Some people seem to have obvious increases in respiration rate (RR) when in REM, which might allow them to at least deduce that stage from the OSCAR data.

That doesn't appear to be the case with me, though; here's what I mean where I can't see correlations between sleep stage and RR. The sleep stage data is imported from the Dreem; stage 2 is REM.

No, it's not.
