Air Sense 10 Autoset settings for Dreamwear nasal pillows vs FFM

Post by Thunderegg37 » Sun Jan 12, 2020 9:34 pm

Hey all, as noted in the subject, I have the Air Sense 10 Autoset. I have the Dreamwear fit pack with the nasal pillows (gel) and also the Full Face Mask with the cutout for the nose and the completely open mouth area. This is smaller than most FFM and I like it.

I get sores on the inside part of my nostrils and have a pretty large cut on the left side that doesn't want to heal. I'm a bit tired of the "crusty stuff" that the gel pillows cause, as well. So, I'm going to try the full face mask option with the extra support strap.

I tried this FFM before and had it too tight during a nap for a few hours during the day. Woke up with massive pain on the septum area right above my upper lip. It was simply too tight. I've found a decent tightness that prevents leaks and seals quite well without being too tight. It is the pressure of the "jaws coming in and out with each breath" feeling that I have to get used to since I'm only used to pillows.

So here's my specific and direct QUESTIONS: I know that I have to change the Air Sense 10 settings from nasal to full face mask. I presume that the Dreamwear FFM should get the full face mask setting on the machine? What's the "nasal" mask option for? Some people seem to refer to the Dreamwear FFM as "nasal" mask and others call it a full face mask. Which setting do I use? Also, should my pressure setting be changing for the FFM vs the nasal pillow mask? I feel like the pressure is about to blow me away with the FFM strapped on. It is the same 7.8cm pressure, but it doesn't feel that strong with the nasal pillows. Of course, the headgear is the same thing, as well. Shouldn't the flow rate be the same or how does that work?

The nasal pillows should use the Pillows setting on the machine. The Full Face Mask should use the Full Face setting. Nasal masks are in between FFM and pillows, have about the same profile as pillows and don't cover the mouth.

Also, I currently have EPR turned completely off for the nasal pillows. Is there any reason for me to activate it with a FFM or should it be similar?

Please update your equipment settings in your profile.

There is a *very very* small change in pressure (around a tenth to fifth one cm) pressure depending on whether you choose FFM or pillow (I've measured it) The machine uses that setting to compensate for extra resistance in nasal pillow masks, they're smaller, they have a higher resistance to airflow, so the machine raises the pressure ever so slightly.

Any significant difference in pressure you're perceiving is pretty much just your imagination.

"Nasal" is for masks that cover the nose.

The Dreamware is NOT a nasal mask, because it doesn't cover the nose. any mask that is open to the mouth is a "FFM", no matter what others may say.

EPR has nothing at all to do with the mask selection, so, set it however you want.
