First time CPAP use ....complete failure

Post by JamesD45 » Thu Jan 09, 2020 3:14 pm

All,

I’m currently using the resmed med air curve 10 S with a choice of masks. Airfit P30 i (pillow mask) and the F30 full face.

Folks, I toss and turned so much and this has been going on for the last three years since A major family event that was very negative in my life took place. I toss and turn so much that my mattress shifts off the frame 3 to 4 inches each night.

So last night I put one of the masks on and started the machine and at some point during the night the hose popped off and or I removed the mask off my head. Come morning the mask was off my head. The way I flip around I can’t see those softly attached houses staying in place.

I really don’t know if there are any suggestions that can help with this, but I thought I would give it a shot and post my circumstances. I have viewed multiple posts and there are some very helpful people in this group.

Maybe I am an Oral Appliance candidate. I don’t really know at this point, but I am desperate at this point and it took along time to get here .

Thanks in advance .

Are you being treated for restless leg syndrome?
Or PTSD?
These disorders may need to be treated independently

Hi, the sleep study was negative on the restless legs.

PTSD.....one could argue that I have the PTSD and it turned into the sleep issue conversation along with other health complications over time. There is data out there that supports that. Because , I don’t fit the profile for “most” folks with apnea or other.

My young daughter was killed and taken from me three years ago. I’ll just say it.

I’m just trying to stay alive myself now after a very prolonged grief cycle.

James, I cannot imagine the pain of your loss and grief. I am so very sorry. What I wish for you is the kind of close and loving support and comfort that we all would need in the aftermath.

I will mention a product I've never tried that you might want to look into: a weighted blanket. Apparently for some people it cuts down on the tossing and turning, and for some it also provides a sense of greater security and calm. I don't think there's any good research on this yet, but it might be worth trying.

I am so sorry for your loss as well.
I can only offer a big, wet, froggy cyber-hug.

Thank you.

Weighted blanket.......now that sounds like it could have some potential. Get me out of fight or flight and maybe this CPAP machine might work.

Much appreciated.

Best,

James

Hi James :

My recent posts are on the thread " Please help me get better " a few from this post .On purpose I sent it directly to the "top" by referencing Pugsy ( ATTN ) - although I was unsure that their would be time for Pugsy to address all my inquiries . But that has taken place !

And your correct - their is real bench strength on this Forum .I'm a 5 year in ( badly operating/poorly focused ) CPAP user with very checkered CPAP results in consequence . But I've just recently ( and I mean last night ) hit the jackpot( for me ) of an AHI score of 1.6 . Nothing close in 5 years . Whereas before getting help on this forum I was all over the map and often at 20 and so - or more . Primarily Pugsy and Zoomer brought me in at this score and I'm cautiously optimistic that I can keep the AHI down - to maybe under 5 for a norm .

I've gone through a lot of what you mentioned over these years . In some instances even finding that I had pulled the mask off in my sleep - without knowing . A real horror of sleep deprivation .

This past fall I was getting sicker and sicker and more and more distressed over sleep and related complete burnout - as sleep deprivation for me triggered all manner of collateral damage . So I decided " I'm going to go all in on sleep apnea and CPAP" - learn all I can and apply all I can- and deal with this subject and get my health back instead of limping along with more horror years on CPAP . Do read my thread . Got rid of full face mask two years ago - I had to have it so tight it has left permanent indentations in my face . Now use nasal pillow only . Had a very hard time getting use to that as I would have desert mouth each morning . Now I use a chin strap to keep mouth closed and nasal mask over that . What I see on this and other Forums ( this one seems the best for me ) is that everyone is different in terms of what they need and what combination of equipment , adjustments, and strategies are required . And the only way is to devote oneself to learning all you can possibly learn . I see now that OSCAR is a huge source of relevant data and I only got fixed on that today . But I have other data response tools as well .

Finally, I tried the heavy sleep blanket in November - but that was far too much added weight my chest and that impaired my breathing even more - had to post it back at a cost of mail -$ 45. . But I was desperate to try everything . And money now for apnea is a priority - whatever it takes - before I was parsimonious ( aka cheap ) about some of that .But a weighted blanket - Maybe it would work for you but it seems to me that you need to get the basics in place first - such as keeping a mask on throughout the night . But Im a newbie at this and say that off the top of no knowledge CPAP head .

Anyway good luck - keep going - take as much help as you can get and get well .I'm hoping I'm now on the true CPAP path .

ppp

Tossing and turning and a lot of movement at night is often a side effect of untreated sleep apnea, you can move around a lot trying to get air.

Not keeping the mask on the whole night is pretty common.
Something is on your face..knocking it off is as automatic and natural as shooing away a mosquito or fly.
In addition to the other fine suggestions I would suggest wearing the mask a couple of hours before bed while you are awake..so having it on becomes 'normal'.

Cpap success is a journey, not a sprint. You won't get it literally overnight. I agree with the others, your tossing in sleep could very well be due to having apnea events, and will start to subside when your brain starts to reconcile with cpap and getting decent sleep. I did the same thing my initial couple of weeks, would rip the mask off in my sleep constantly, and wake up holding it in pieces. This is all assuming that your symptoms stem from diagnosed apnea events that are occurring.
Yay :D For no more diaphragm cramps and dozing off while driving!

I flipped and tossed and turned for years. I still flip sometimes but my sleep is a lot more restful with the pap machine.

Make it your friend. As someone else mentioned wear it while awake to get used to it. Also personalize it. I crocheted soft hose covers to snuggle with rather than the hard plastic hose.

Sorry for your loss. As mom to two daughters I can't even imagine the pain you must be in.
