Air Filter! Why? Do I need it? If so wheres the proof?
1st post!
Almost 3 months in and I am wondering if there is really any use for having an air filter in my cpap machine.
The package states it's only for Pollen and its winter in Ohio. plus I have an air purifier in my bedroom.
Budget is a major issue, and I'm am definitely not a blind follower of the "medical" suggestions.
The filter seems pretty worthless when I look at it and I don't need to be spending money on something that isn't really effective or needed.
Thanks!

then don't. seriously, it's up to you when or if you change your filter. i change it when it gets mucky enough that i think it needs doing.crittercherub wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 4:24 pm1st post!

like you, i'm cheap. also i'm quite lazy. so this is something that's down to you, much like cleaning out your humidifier tank. i do it when it gets scuzzy.
good luck!

The same reason you have nose hairs and mucus, to clean crap out of the air that's not good to breath. Personally, we don't care what you put up your nose, it's your choice. I breath much better at night than I do during the day, on filtered air. Jim

It cleans the crap out of the air.
If you have a fan or ceiling fan you will notice all the dirt that builds up on the blades.
Same thing happens to the fan/motor in the machine.
If you don't mind your motor burning out prematurely, save a few bucks now and buy a new machine whenever it blows up for more than a few hundred. I hear used ones are relatively cheap on Craigslist among other places.
Happy cpaping.

Filters need changing at 3-6 months depending on your environment. They cost about 75¢ when you buy them in quantity on ebay. If things get tough, let us know, I'm sure someone will send you one.

Re: Air Filter! Why? Do I need it? If so wheres the proof?
Any filter collects schmutz until it is full.
Then almost NOTHING can get through it.
This stresses the motor, which overheats, and malfunctions ahead of its time.
This is not a good thing.

It looks like your CPAP uses different filters than mine, but mine uses a small foam block that i can wash out, and optionally an additional white pollen filter. Mostly, it keeps dust and (cat) hair out of the machine where it can foul the blower. Probably a good investment to protect your machine.

Allergens are in the air all year long.
Sometimes it is pollen.
The rest of the time, it can be mold spores, house dust, outdoor dust, road dust, etc.
I prefer not to detail all the horrible things that constitute "dust"; but it can be ugly.
Allergies or just plain irritation can make these substances unpleasant, even sickening.
Filters are cheap compared to being sick.

Re: Air Filter! Why? Do I need it? If so wheres the proof?
Does your air purifier in the room prevent you from havng to dust, run the sweeper, or mop? If your air is indeed clean, the filter is probably not a big issue. I'm interested in hearing how well the air purifier works. I live in a valley with little rain to clear the air, and the amount of dirt that accumulates on surfaces makes me an affirmed filter user. Hope to nurse this machine along for a few more years.

I doubt very much the packaging states, it's only for Pollen.crittercherub wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 4:24 pm

Listing only Pollen, shouldn't be interpreted as only for Pollen.

I agree. First thing I noticed after my first few nights was how much clearer my lungs felt. And I thought they were good before, even as an ex smoker!

I'm lazy too, and I can see the dust in the room all around the bed, so the cheap little filter does help and I do feel a difference. You can remove it, flick the dust off, and put it back in most of the time. Mine's a thin foam filter.
