Just want to upgrade!
Just want to upgrade!
Hi, I am new to the forum but I have been using CPAP for 15+ years and it changed my life. I’m still using my original machine (REMstar M-series) but it is getting noisy and I want to upgrade. I attempted a home sleep study but I simply cannot sleep without CPAP so I got no results. I’m attempting to find my original sleep study but that may be a challenge.
My wife was diagnosed with mild OSA in 2011 but could never get used to wearing a mask (she refuses to give it enough time IMO, but that’s another story.). Her machine is a ResMed Elite S9 (now in my profile) and I would like to give that a try. I contacted a DME service company but they will not adjust the machine without SS results and a script.
I found the ResMed Clinical manual online. I no longer need ramp setting to fall asleep so that’s not an issue. I have read the posts about Sleepyhead and OSCAR and I will go “geeky” after I sort out the basics.
So, I have 2 initial questions:
1. Is there any alternative to a sleep study for long-standing CPAP users?
2. Do I need any other “how to” info (beyond the clinical manual) on adjusting clinical settings?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Just want to upgrade!
1) the data from the machine itself
2) if you mean "how to do it", no. If you mean "what should I set it to", start with your old settings, then post a chart.

Re: Just want to upgrade!
The alternative to sleep study would be an Autoset machine and Oscar Software.

Re: Just want to upgrade!
An autoset makes it easier, but one can get an elite set up tight, it's just harder to do.

For the record.......... The Respironics REMstar M Series didn't hit the market until 2006........that's 13 years ago.Leaston wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 12:20 pmHi, I am new to the forum but I have been using CPAP for 15+ years and it changed my life. With a data-capable machine (like the Resmed S9 Elite) it would be like getting a sleep study every night.
Even with a straight-pressure machine, you can find the correct pressure in a relatively short period of time.
Just start with the pressure you've been using in your old M-Series machine and monitor your results. If you need to tweak your pressure, give each setting a few nights (or a week) to see how well it works.

Re: Just want to upgrade!
Just buy an autoset machine from a forum user here and then utilize the resourceful people here by providing properly formatted sleep data from the SD Card. I never had a sleep study or a prescription and have been successfully self-treating for over a year now.
I still have a few autosets laying around if you are interested in something on the cheaper side. I believe I have a higher hours S9 Autoset that that I would part with for $120 + shipping. Or you could spring for an even better machine like the AirCurve 10 VAuto that LSAT has listed on here.

Re: Just want to upgrade!
Thanks everyone and thanks Den for correcting my recollection. I found the ResMed clinical manual online shortly after posting my questions and used it to set my pressure to 10 cm. I have OSCAR set up on my PC but I have yet to import the data from the SD card. Maybe today.Wulfman... wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 9:18 pmFor the record.......... So far it seems to be doing the job as well as my REMstar and it is much quieter. I picked up the DC-DC voltage converter on Amazon for battery backup. I sent SoClean an email about the ResMed adapter and they are sending me one for free!
Sooo, I’m a happy camper and my wife no longer complains about the noise. Good to know that there is private market for machines since the “approved” process is such a hassle.
Thanks again. I will post charts if I need further assistance.

Re: Just want to upgrade!
Palerider,
I am new to this data but looking at these stats and some basic info from the web, my AHI over the last 3 days looks pretty good to me. A few major leaks but overall it seems like everything is working pretty well. Highest AHI was 1.52, lowest was 0.72 with a downward trend over 3 days. If you think I should be doing better, I can send the daily detail graphs but I thought this was good for a quick look. BTW, my initial SS showed AHI >60.
Thanks for the help!

If you are feeling good and sleeping good then I see no reason to go messing around with anything.
Numbers look pretty darn good to me.

An AHI of under 1.5 is good.Leaston wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 1:27 pmPalerider,

Re: Just want to upgrade!
So new reason for wanting an upgrade. I loaned my backup machine (REMstar M series) to my brother-in-law because his DS was recalled. Been using the ResMed S9 (originally my wife’s) for 30 months. All is good with that. However, if I wanted to get a new machine, is there any way to do that without a prescription? As noted above, my home sleep study was deemed invalid because I did not sleep and my original prescription is no longer on file (too old.) I’m reluctant to go for another SS because I expect the same result. Looking for ideas. Are private sales still a thing?

Re: Just want to upgrade!
Try sending a private message to forum member LSAT to see what he might be able to provide you with. A ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset would be ideal, but you could also use a (more expensive) ResMed Aircurve VAuto.
