Will a fleece cover cause any problems over an Autoset 10's Heated Hose?
Will a fleece cover cause any problems over an Autoset 10's Heated Hose?
I was getting a strong chemical odor (like burning plastic) the first night after receiving my NEW ResMed AutoSet AirSense10 machine w/ ClimateLineAir Heated Tube. I immediately thought o f toxic vapors and became very concerned . . . especially since I loved my lovely small, quiet new machine with a heated hose and didn't want to return it!!
Tonight I wondered if it might have anything to do with the fact that I covered the heated hose with my fleece tube-cover, fastening it to the hose at both ends with rubber bands. ~ I removed the fleece cover and NO BURNING PLASTIC ODOR!! Could the the secured fleece cover have caused overheating? That's the only explanation I could come up with.
I did a site search, and found that others have had this problem with a strong chemical odor. No mention was made of whether the heated hose was covered.
Any ideas on where the "burning plastic" or chemical odor may have come from would be welcome & appreciated. Thx.

Re: Warning: Don't cover an Autoset 10 machine's Heated Hose!
There is *ABSOLUTELY* no reason NOT to use a hose cover.
The heated hoses are *thermostatically* controlled... the temperature sensor is at the mask end of the hose.
All that having a hose cover does is *reduce the amount of electricity needed to maintain the desired hose temperature.
Many people happily use hose covers with their Air10 heated hoses.

What kind of fleece cover had you been using and on another heated hose???? No problem on the other hose?
Did you go from a S9 to the AirSense 10?
I have used various hose covers over several heated hoses over the years and never had a problem.

Palerider & Pugsy . . . well guess my deduction was wrong! Thanks for your comments. I'm convinced the cover was not my problem afterall. Still wondering what caused such a STRONG chemical smell!! It seems to be gone tonight, my 2nd night with my new products . . .
Pugsy, I went from a Respironics Remstar Auto-CPAP M-series to the ResMed AutoSet 10. I used the thick (hand-sewn) fleece cover on my regular hose, NOT my Aussie Heated Hose (bought online from Australia years ago, had it's own thin cover). Had you been using a fleece cover on the same ClimateLineAir heated hose with your AutoSet 10?

Re: Warning: Don't cover an Autoset 10 machine's Heated Hose!
I have used the thin ResMed hose cover in the past (S9 heated hose mainly) and most recently a hand knitted hose cover on my AirSense 10 heated hose.
I have a Padacheek fleece hose cover from back when I used the M series machine which of course didn't have a heated hose but I have never put it on a heated hose....mainly from the sheer weight of it has been why I didn't use it since I really didn't need all that insulation but I have used a hand knitted (and it's a tight knit and not a loose holey knit) on my AirSense heated hose without any issues.
I am wondering if you just got some extra off gassing or something like that with the new hose.
I have a new hose still sealed in the package but haven't ever opened it. It's an old package though. I wonder if the new just require more off gassing. If I feel like it later I will open the package and test out the new hose and see if it stinks...and I will put the heavy duty hose cover on it as a test.

Sometimes new plastic stuff has a chemical odor, till it airs out.JoyD. wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2019 7:15 pmPalerider & Pugsy . . . well guess my deduction was wrong! Thanks for your comments. The Aussie heated hose was not thermostatically controlled, so using a hose cover on it was strongly discouraged.

Re: Will a fleece cover cause any problems over an Autoset 10's Heated Hose
Thanks, Pugsy! I put the fleece cover back on the 2nd night . . . NO chemical odor! It probably would be a good idea to attach the mask to the heated hose & turn it on for a day to let air get rid of the plastic gases BEFORE wearing it the first night.
PS - Sorry, but I am not able to "highlight text" or "cut & paste" with my Amazon Fire Tablet. I may have to bite the bullet & buy an Apple laptop. I already feel the need to see more than my LED screen tells me!

Some weird chemical smells come from cleaning products--especially cheap stuff.
I tried dollar tree baby wipes, and they were NASTY!
I have been known to do the sniff test in stores--and nobody gives me crap.
