Help for sore nostrils
Hi - I don't know if anyone has had the experience of nasal pillows causing some soreness and discomfort around the nostrils, but I have. I mentioned it to my wife and she recently brought home an ointment for me to try. Here's a link to the product: https://www.babymantra.com/collections/ ... h-ointment.
This stuff works great for me. I put just a thin coating of it around the edges of the nostrils where the nasal mask makes contact - I do this as I'm getting the mask fitted at bedtime. It really helps to make the nasal pillows a lot more comfortable and I'm not getting the soreness I had before. Doesn't seem to have any adverse effect on getting a good seal, either.

Re: Help for sore nostrils
Thanks, but I'll stay away from Baby Mantra ointment. Both the warnings and the ingredient lists are suspect. It even contains alcohol. And, zinc oxide may damage nasal pillows.jon.koelker wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2019 11:35 amhttps://www.babymantra.com/collections/ ... h-ointment.
The standard lubricant that regulars here recommend is Lansinoh Lanolin.Warnings: For external use only. Do not use: on deep or puncture wounds; animal bites; serious burns. When using this product: do not get into eyes. Stop use and ask a doctor if: condition worsens; symptoms last more than 7 days or clear up and occur again within a few days. Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide (10%). Purpose: Skin Protectant. Inactive Ingredients: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Beeswax (White), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol (D-Alpha), Aqua (Water), Alcohol.
Lansinoh Lanolin is the #1 recommended nipple cream by moms and doctors in the US. Clinically tested. Lansinoh Lanolin soothes and protects sore nipples for breastfeeding moms.

Re: Help for sore nostrils
I would be concerned about anything containing zinc in the airway.
It is not inert, and some zinc products have been associated with loss of olfactory senses.

Re: Help for sore nostrils
If you're looking for something more natural, inert and not sourced from animals (like lanolin) you might give Nozaid a try. It's just pure sesame oil, and gently lubes up the old nose. (I got some on Amazon).
Re: Help for sore nostrils
Lanolin doesn't just lube it up.
It soothes and heals.
Gives it a good lubing while doing it.
And what is wrong with sourcing from animals?
We are animals.

Re: Help for sore nostrils
I use 100% pure shea butter. I rub a little around the outside of my nose as well, where I usually get itches that can't be reached once the mask is in place.
Re: Help for sore nostrils
My doctor recently recommended Ayr, a saline gel available at the local grocery store. Seems to work okay for irritated nasal passages.

Re: Help for sore nostrils
Ayr gel contains salt. It's a great gel for nasal passages.
However, the OP was asking about "soreness and discomfort around the nostrils". Ayr gel, or anything containing salt, should not be used on the skin.

Re: Help for sore nostrils
Sesame oil?? It's great in my Bulgogi recipe, but how the heck do you stand the smell rubbed on your nostrils? And, what a mess it must make on the mask and bedclothes.
BTW, by no definition is sesame oil "inert".

Re: Help for sore nostrils
I use Burt's Bee's lipbalm every night on my lips before bed, and just extend it below my nostrils if I feel I need a little extra soothing.
