Constant cough with mask on

Post by pamsdrew » Thu Oct 24, 2019 7:21 am

As soon as I removed the mask, the coughing stopped. I had to remove my cpap in order to sleep. What is the cause of this and what can I do to stop it?

Please provide some useful info we can look at - what machine/model/type do you use, what mask, what are pressure settings, ramp (if you use it), what meds do you take, do you use the humidifier? We aren't magicians and need lots of help to help you.

AirSense 10 CPAP with HumidAir and ClimateLineAir Tube is the machine I use.

The cough just started and I have been using the machine for two years. I recently go over respiratory issues, if that helps.

Thanks for trying.

Any change in medications or additions? New or different illness?
There are a few meds that have coughing as a side effect and made worse by cpap.

Look at your environment...anything new or different? If you have been using cpap for 2 years and never had this problem then I would look at what may have changed.

Also...the obvious...change filters just in case.

Sorry but I don't understand

I have added some different medication, such as eyedrops for glaucoma.
I've also been taking TESSALON for a cold.

Thanks so much for your support!

So you have a cold now and the coughing is made worse once you use your cpap? Is that correct?
You are using the climate line heated hose....do you know if your humidity setting is on "auto" or manual?
If manual...what is the setting?

Only thing I can think of is maybe try humidity set to manual and increase the setting to maybe 6 and see if that helps or not. The auto setting is roughly equal to a setting of 4 which is sort of middle of the road.
Often when we have an upper respiratory infection the medication we take for the symptoms can dry us out a bit and that includes the cilia in the lungs and when they get dry they tend to get irritated and make us cough. Maybe a little more moisture going to the cilia will help reduce the coughing reflex.
Otherwise standard advice for when we have any upper respiratory illness...treat the symptoms as best we can and keep yourself very well hydrated (helps those cilia) and give yourself some time for the illness to run its course.
Hot steamy shower right before bedtime might also help. Hot steamy showers always seem to help me breath better when I have a cold.

When we have a cold we just don't sleep so great and we wouldn't even if we didn't have OSA and need the machine.
Do the best you can while you are ill and time will take care of the rest.

welcome to the zoo! you are in good hands with pugsy and i have nothing to add to that.

my suggestion otherwise is, when you get a moment, could you please fill out your equipment profile? that way your machine and mask will show up every time you post.

thanks and good luck!

Do you happen to take a blood pressure medication.........like Lisinopril?
It's a KNOWN cause of dry coughing.
Whatever medications you're taking, go to https://www.drugs.com/ and look them up........including the side effects.

I had personal experience with Lisinopril, so I'm very familiar with its side effects before my doctor switched me to another medication.

In the mean time, I would suggest getting a supply of cough lozenges and cough syrup. They may get you some needed sleep.

Here's a search link in case you want to check our past discussions.

When I was prescribed Tessalon pearls, it was for a cough. I have found that if I have a cough, I need to raise my pressure a little to get past the coughing with cpap. My normal pressure starts 11, so I raise it to 13 when I have a cough. I get past a few coughing spasms and then I fall asleep. Once my cough is gone, I put my pressure back down.
