Interesting Article on Oxygen flow and OSA

Post by schaefage » Sun Feb 25, 2007 11:16 pm

I just read this abstract and found it extremely interesting. Anybody have any opinions or insight?

It makes sense to me that a change in O2 would effect OSA. Shorter breathes or cut off breaths but richer O2 to compensate for it. The interesting part was how the higher O2 effected the people in the tests. Seems to me though its just one more factor for them to look at and maybe work on to incorporate into OSA treatment. Mainly, I think for those people who don't seem to be responding to the set OSA treatment to look into or really bad cases where their O2 levels drop badly and the Xpaps can't help enough. It's most likely not done for most OSA treatments because O2 is very flammable, when my dad was on O2 before he died I had to put up signs on my doors to warn everyone not to smoke in the house and be careful with open flames. Also O2 tanks are pretty expensive and have to be refilled. I would hate to have to deal with them daily or every other day again. I think my old nose mask had a port on it to hook up an O2 line, it was a Comfort Classic. In this pic you can see the port. But I could be wrong.

Actually, you don't necessarily have to have tanks constantly needing to be refilled. They have small 3L concentrators and somewhat larger 5L concentrators that "make their own" 02. Of course, they aren't cheap either ......

Nice, I love it when tech gets better most of the time. I haven't seen or used an O2 setup since my dad was using one, that was about 9 or more years ago. Glad they found something better.
