Voltage and cpap machines

Post by Chapalauser » Fri Oct 11, 2019 12:38 pm

Am off to Mexico next week with a new cpap machine. What is the best way to protect it from voltage spikes?

1. Your machine is very unlikely to be damaged by voltage spikes.

2. If there is a very large spike (lightning for example), the machine would need to be wired into an iron grounding rod set eight feet deep in the ground.

3. If you are really worried, buy a Belkin for about $12 - https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Mini-Surg ... 630&sr=1-1 . It's a waste of money, but if it makes you feel better ...

Enjoy your trip!

Assuming that you're coming from the US or from Canada, the voltage in Mexico is within the tolerance range (even in the unlikely event that your CPAP is not dual-voltage). Therefore, you can pack any surge suppressor that you would normally use in the US or Canada.

Note that almost every CPAP on the market can tolerate 100 to 240 volts. However, I don't know if that means it can handle sudden spikes (say from 120 to 190 for a few seconds).

Let me turn this around a bit.

Has anybody ever had damage to a CPAP machine due to a power surge (in Mexico or anywhere else)? If so, please let us know what happened.
