Knocked my machine off the night table twice this past week

Post by jani7 » Mon Oct 07, 2019 9:20 am

So, after 4 months of easily adapting to using a cpap machine, this past week I've knocked the machine off my night table onto myself (it's on a shelf a little above head height) waking me.
I do turn side to side occasionally during the night, but twice now I guess I've wrapped the hose around myself, causing the fall onto me.

Water is then in the hose from the fall, so I have to drain it before trying to get back to sleep around 4AM!

Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to avoid this, besides the wiseguy answer of don't move................ :-)

Thanks!

Consider some sort of hose management system so that you can't wrap yourself up in the hose so easily.
You can make your own or buy a ready made hose management system.
You can find some ideas here

I pulled my machine of the bedside table, once.

I've since stuck four rubber feet on the bottom of my machine, hasn't moved an inch. Also worth noting, Since changing from a P10 nasal mask to a top mounted P30i, I no longer get wrapped in my hose and have a lot of hose to spare.

Keep the machine on or near the floor and get a longer hose. Hopefully the water did not get into the blower or under the humidifier plate.

I use a Hose Buddy, which works well for me. Also, if you put a fabric cover on your long hose, you can safety-pin it to your bottom sheet.

I've used this hose management system for 8 years and it has served me quite well with no problems. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/HoseBu ... ion-System

If you decide to go with a hose management system, think about how you will pack it and carry it on trips. I don't use one because of this issue.

You should get the machine off the shelf that is above you. I have mine on a nightstand that is slightly lower than the top of the mattress. The nightstand is positioned just next to the mattress. If the hose pulls the machine, the machine will bump up against the mattress and not move any further. This has also worked in every hotel I have stayed in.

My machine sits on a heavy mousepad. This helps keep the machine in place if the hose pulls on it. Slobber's use of rubber feet seems to be another good idea (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rubber+feet+ ... _ss_i_7_11).

You definitely don't want to have a ruinous water spill from the humidifier into the machine's electronics.

jani7, i put my machine on the floor and use a six foot hose.

works for me but then i'm not a restless sleeper.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Wow!
There are some great ideas here!
I really like the Cord Bundler, looks so simple.
But what really caught my eye, don't know why it never crossed my mind, was putting the machine inside the night table drawer. That would eliminate pulling it down on top of me and potentially frying the machine's circuitry from the water spillage.
Have to check if it fits tonight when I get home.

Thank you!

Rubber feet sounds like a good idea, but I wonder how much it would help if the hose is stuck under me and I tug at it while asleep.
I have a P30i as a back up, so that is a possible solution, to use it as my main mask.

Didn't know this existed.
Definitely looks like a good idea.

Thank you!

Just tie the hose to something solid between your mask and the machine. Close to the machine. You will then not be able to pull the machine anywhere, anyhow or anytime. As granny says so often Simple.

Unfortunately I am a restless sleeper.
I had it on the floor the first night, but then the wife made me move it up onto the night table's shelf, because it made the room look cluttered..................

I've got lots of ideas floating around in my tiny little brain now.
The simplest, easiest one I'll try first is placing the machine into the night table's drawer, if it fits. At least this way, it would be physically impossible for me to pull the machine down upon myself.

I also thought of putting double sided Velcro tape onto the machine bottom, therefore locking it into place, yet removable if need be.

Thanks to all!
You've been a great help!!!!!!!!!!!!

So ironic that I have no trouble adjusting to using a cpap, but then have the basic problem of pulling it down.

Hose management can be very compact.
I have used scrunchies and duck tape, or safety pins, rubber bands--.

I have a 10 foot hose, plenty of slack.

If you're a restless sleeper, your therapy may not be working well, which causes you to wake up and move around more.
