Rarely sleep more than 6 hrs.

Post by Sluggish » Sat Sep 28, 2019 8:54 am

Seems to be regardless of conditions.
I could starve myself of sleep for 3 days, find a dark, soundproof room, and have a mask with no leaks... I’m still only going to get 6hrs at the most.
Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas what could be the cause(s)?

Are there sounds that wake you up in the middle of my dreams?

My average has been 6-6.5 hours for several years....As you get older less sleep is needed.

For many years I have slept about 6 hours nightly and wake spontaneously in the morning. hat is my personal "normal".

Ever try white noise? I swear by this, we've been using it for years.

Lots of free phone apps out there. I use one called Sleep-o when I travel. It's good, lots of options. Probably to many. I really don't need to combine forest sounds with a crackling fire in a thunderstorm and frogs ribbiting with lute music and meditation chanting... with an airliner flying over and city traffic sounds. But I could if I wanted to. What a cacophony!

My favorite though is the noise machine we've had for around 20 years. I like "babbling brook" type sounds. I really don't even notice that it's on anymore. We have it turned up fairly loud too.

I too seem to average 6 hours and can rarely sleep more than that. I’ve wondered if it’s attributed to maintenance insomnia or if it’s just my normal. About 5-6 years ago I noticed I wasn’t able to sleep more than 6 hours anymore. So it’s possible it could be maintenance insomnia or your body’s normal. Also, a symptom of depression is early more awakenings.

Let us know if you find out more information!

Yep, I'm around 6.5, 7....if I hit 7.5 my body is like ok, this is too much, it's time to get up, and 8 is just ludicrous.
Yay :D For no more diaphragm cramps and dozing off while driving!

Hmmm...
I have always heard 8hrs is the magic number regardless of age or anything else and that needing less sleep as we age is a myth. Hard to say. I might not even be questioning it if I wasn’t tired all the time still.

The closer I get to 8 hours, the better I feel.

Agreed. 8 is the number.
8 for sleep, 8 for work, 8 for family and leisure = 24hrs.
The only thing that should change with age is less work and more leisure.

And less family comes naturally--I hardly ever see the remaining in-laws.
We only came together to please the now gone family matriarch.
Now we all go our separate ways.

I'm good with 7-7.5 hours, but on the weekends (when I sleep in), I usually wake after 8-ish hours. I think that's what my body wants.

Welcome to the club...though this is not a club you want to join.

I wake up at about 3 in the morning and it’s hard for me to go back to sleep. My GP says it comes with my age (50’s). Usually I wake up feeling hungry like wah! I’ll eat something fatty, like cheese or meat. That usually helps me a bit.

I also have a rain sound app on my phone that helps too.

6 hours isn’t enough in my mind. ResMed give you full points (70) on 7 hours of sleep and less if it’s under 7. Here’s a great TED speak on “Sleep” the benefits and quite shocking revelations if you don’t get enough. It also gives tips on how to get quality sleep. https://www.ted.com/talks/matt_walker_s ... edcomshare

From about 12:00 it actually compares people who sleep 6 hours with 8 hours. Video 19 minutes long.
