Follow-up Sleep Study

Post by jani7 » Thu Sep 19, 2019 1:29 pm

I started using my cpap in early June, so last night I had a 3 month sleep study follow up using my own mask and hose.
The following is a partial transcript of my discussion with the technician while hooking me up to all the wires:

Tech: So I see your prescription was for pressure of 4 - 9, how is it?
Me: A couple of weeks ago I adjusted it to 6 - 12 which turns out to be much more comfortable. The Dr gets daily reports submitted by my machine, I guess he's too busy to read them before my scheduled 3 month sleep study.
Tech: Why did you do that? How did you do that? The Dr will be very angry.
Me: Like I just told you, 4-9 felt a little uncomfortable even after a couple of months. It's easy to learn how to change settings if you wish to learn. I don't really care what the Dr thinks, I'm the one who experiences this.

Long pause.

Tech: You know, the Dr doesn't approve of patients altering their prescriptions.
Me: I tried his prescription to a T for 2 months. Once I became a little more knowledgeable I learned how to adjust my cpap's settings to what is now more comfortable. I would have thought a patients comfort during therapy would be supported by the good Dr.
Tech: Well, the Dr knows best.
Me: I experience the cpap every night, I know what works for me, and the Oscar reports back me up.
Tech: You know about Oscar?
Me: Yes

This crap went on for a bit longer until I had had enough.

Just thought I'd share this, amazes me about the attitudes of this sleep center.

And this is not to even mention the physical conditions of the sleep study.
Wires attached to all parts of the body severely limiting movements while in bed.
A bed that was so worn, I felt like I was sleeping on a mountain side.
Loud talking, bangs, crashes in the hallway outside my room.
etc

Lots of fun.
Can't wait for the study's results in 4 weeks!

If you get a full data XPAP, and software (OSCAR), You can look or post it, and basically get a"Sleep Study, basically you one every night, no cost! Jim

Did this experience make you wonder why you scheduled a follow-up study with these morons?

Maybe next time, just take an OSCAR summary report to your sleep doc showing him how well you are doing.

Congratulations to a true CPAPTALK person! Yup! The doctor needs to learn (and so does that tech) that THEY work for you, not the other way around.

Thanks for all the support everyone!
It's reassuring to read that I wasn't the dumb stubborn one.

My Resmed 10 and Oscar provides all the detailed info I (and the Dr need).
As long as my results are good, I don't feel a need to accept another "follow-up" sleep test.
After all, I think about the only pertinent stat a sleep study can gather that the cpap and Oscar can't get is how much I actually sleep. (They did mention I had a very long dream during my sleep over)

After a few more days I'll post the most recent graphs, but since I adjusted my settings a few days ago to min 6 max 12 (from min 4 max 9) I've had 0 for AHCI and about 3 for leaks. I think that's good, no?

The whole cpap business seems to have quite a few shady/conflicted elements.
Quite disappointing.

It makes you wonder how many of the PROVIDERS think it is a scam.
No wonder there are so many unbelievers . . .
