Sleepyhead review

Post by Treehorn » Tue Sep 10, 2019 10:09 am

Hi folks. Member since 2009 but I have not been active on the board since Jan 2018.

I was hoping to post some data to help sort out some issues I am having.

I have not been to a sleep study for over 10 years. I not given my setup much thought until recently.
Way back March 2018 I put myself off auto (I put myself on Auto in the first place) on straight cpap 14 cmH20 WITHOUT exhale relief because I actually do not like lower and changing pressure. I guess I take comfort in feeling my machine. Higher than my original 9 cmH20 but I based that on auto data and it felt good too. It was going pretty good, I thought.

About a year ago I stopped drinking. I drank too much IMO. About 30 a week. 4 - 5 beer on a weekday and 8 on a Friday with friends. I expected to see a big improvement in my sleep numbers but it never really transpired.
At the same time I traded one intoxicant for another. I moved to Rx cannabis to manage stress and anxiety and it has been working out great but I don't know how CBD and THC play havoc with sleep. Also for the first time in my life I am smoking. Only 1 cannabis cigarette a night but still very much worth mentioning.

In the last 6 months I started getting terrible gas. After eliminating all other causes and following a gut feeling (pun intended) I looked into Aerophagia and it seemed to fit. One night I could feel\hear a little air pushing past the esophagus into my belly. Note I am always nasal congested and I am a mouth breather who uses a full face mask. I started to play with things to try and help. I turned on exhale relief. It seems to help with the Aerophagia but my wife says I snore much more, and I didnt feel as rested. Maybe 14 cmH20 its too much pressure? So I turn the machine back to auto to see what it thinks. BAM! Machine has me topping out the machine at 20 most nights! What?!?!?!? I went from 9 years ago to 20? That the top of the machine. Where do I go from here?

In June I turned to a memory foam cushion for my mask instead of the silicone one. That timing seems to match up pretty good with when some of the AHI numbers started to go haywire.

There so many factors that have been changing that I feel a little lost.

I suppose I need to go for another sleep study and get some medical advise, but I often found better advice here. So I come to you wise people for some advice. :D

Spend much time sleeping on your back? That likely is why you sometimes hit close to 20 cm.

You probably need more minimum pressure but that likely will feed the aerophagia monster.
The old proverbial "caught between a rock and a hard place".

Good point. I usually sleep on my sides but I hurt my ribs a few months ago sleeping on poor quality hotel beds for work. My rib pain timing aligns with the problems I have been having.
And if the Rx cannabis is too strong I can pass out on my back like a rock.
