Do you ever have days like this?

Post by REMStar Plus C-Flex » Sat Aug 31, 2019 4:29 pm

Hello.

I have had sleep apnea for around 9 years. I use the CPAP nightly, and generally have "okay" results [much better than not using, of course].

My question, of which I have thought many times, is do any readers here experience days that take much longer for you to feel "okay" or for the general funk to wear off? For context: I will usually wake up, feel somewhat odd for a few hours, then generally feel better the rest of the day. Then, there's days in which I am more "buzzed" or "zonked" and it takes until around 1500-1700 (3-5 PM) to even feel somewhat "okay." This comes off as very subjective, I know, but I am curious as to the prevalence of this phenomenon in other users, knowing that it may be that I just get that feeling some days due to less quality sleep, leakage, posture, other possible factors [factors that may necessitate titration, Dr. appointment, etc., that I usually just tolerate] that could have made me experience some apneas EVEN though I wear the mask every night....

There is a lot of variation in how rested I feel day to day, and not much of it has to do with apnea. Let’s see, pain during the night, bad dreams, loud noises, too hot, too cold, general stress or worry ... it would be quite a list if I put my mind to it.

But from your post it isn’t clear to me whether you ever take a peek at your data using Oscar. If you don’t, that might be the best first step to take. Then you could post a chart and get some good advice here about how your apnea therapy is going.
Oscar software is available at https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/

Welcome to the forum.

Folks...please note the machine the OP is using...older Respironics machine...uses a smart card and the ONLY data it puts on that smart card is hours of use. It is NOT full data machine at all and even if it was those smart card using machines are not compatible with SleepyHead/OSCAR.

To the OP....yes I have good days and bad days but almost always the bad days are related to either the number of hours I have slept or the quality of those hours. I do have a full data machine and can look at my data and it's always fine...for me I have discovered that if I don't get enough hours of sleep my butt will usually drag and if those hours are fragmented from whatever..my butt will drag.

If you are taking any medications....look up the potential side effects.
I take a blood pressure medication that I thought rather benign but once I looked it up I discovered that it can cause daytime fatigue and also mess with sleep quality....bummer. I don't know how much of an impact it actually is but it could be a factor in my not so great days when combined with the other stuff.

I need coffee in the morning. I have major delayed sleep onset and lately fragmented sleep, so my sleep is not as restful as it used to be, Going back to taking low dose melatonin to saee if it helps. Interesting article on sleep apnea might be associated with or cause deranged melatonin production https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28724876

I can't look at any meaningful data as my machine is not capable of AHI and other relevant statistics. It only tells you if you had any leaks. I would need a new machine...

I've pondered/considered the need or the use of having some melatonin. Thanks for the link and suggestion!

Thanks Pugsy! I figure it is something like "good days/bad days," which is why it's something I've "tolerated" for years. It's just that there are times during which it happens more, and that gets you to thinking 'what's the deal?' As far as meds, I take Allopurinol for gout and Lisinopril for high blood pressure [brought on by sleep apnea, of course]. I may have to have a discussion with my Dr., but I'll have to see about that; test the machine I have, in case it is starting to blow less air than it says....
