New Development of Centralized Sleep Apnea

Post by erickr613 » Thu Aug 01, 2019 9:41 am

I’ve began treatment for OSA this last week. After starting treatments I was having moments where I would awake suddenly gasping for breath and my heart racing. Something that had never happened before my pap. The doctor thought I was having some anxiety surrounding the pap use. I’m starting to think this isn’t the case and that I’m beginning to develop bouts of Centralized Sleep Apnea. My dream mapper app shows an increase in Clear Airway Apeneas on a day to day basis. My first night I had 5 over a 4 hour time period. Last night I was only able to wear the system for almost 2 hours before I got frustrated enough and took it off. In those 2 hours I had 10 Clear Airway Apneas. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it something that subsides with the treatment? I never woke up gasping for air prior to wearing a pap. My wife also says I physically stop breathing. She happened to be awake and time it to 20 seconds before I finally woke up gasping. The issue this causes is after 7 times in a short time my adrenaline is pumping and I can’t get back to sleep. I laid in bed awake with the mask on for about 30-45 mins after the final awakening before I pulled the mask off and slept like a baby. This terrifies the living daylights out of me. I’d rather just not sleep with the machine as opposed to waking up gasping.

First of all you need to figure out if those flagged CA/central apneas are real asleep flagged events or if they are related to arousal/awake breathing irregularities flagged by mistake.
So watch all the videos here.

You need to determine if the central flags are causing the awake ups or the wake ups are causing the central flags.

If I remember correctly, CPAP use can sometimes cause centrals in people who otherwise only have OSA. It could be that your pressure needs to be tweaked slightly. Did you have any central apnea in your sleep study?

I had no bouts off Central in my study. Only OSA was observed. I have an appointment Monday to talk to the doctor. She was concerned enough to have me stop usage of the machine until I come in.
