Disposal of old CPAPs

Post by D.H. » Thu Jul 04, 2019 11:46 am

From what I understand, none of the CPAP assistance programs want a machine that's more than two years old (or at least not with more that two years of actual use). They also do want one where the permanently attached cord is frayed, or that is not in proper working condition.

If your old machine is in working condition, you should keep it on hand as a spare.

If not (or if you already have a spare), I guess just recycle it.

Send them to D.H., C.O.D. :lol: Jim

I'll be using mine my three are only 14 years young, cords are still fine all work as if they were new and give full data so I can have a Sleep Study every nite, if I chose.

I donated my old Elite to the homeless clinic.
They would have preferred an auto, because . . . no titration needed.
But they took it.
Find a local organization--with low resources and high desire to serve.
The big, national outfits are flush, so they get picky.

~~~what conditions create a high desire to serve?
Is it genetic 'born with' or is it taught / learned / randomly experienced?
OP, CF or anyone?
Began XPAP May 2016. Autoset Pressure min. 8 / max 15. Ramp off. ERP set at 2. No humidity. Sleepyhead software installed and being looked at daily, though only beginning to understand the data.
Seldon if ever do XPAP cord fray, they don't have cotton or nylon in the cords, they are vinyl, pretty tough! Jim
Like I said, 14 years still good, but I don't swing it around the room ALL the time either. I don't break too many Anvils either! Jim
A rarity, sadly enough.
How it happens is baffling--but there are plenty of the other kind all around.
Some small or new charities may still be running on altruism.
Piles of money attract the wrong kind of leadership.
Some CEOs get 6 or 7 figure salaries--not necessarily proportionate to the people helped.
I have a frayed permanent cord on my 1999 CPAP. I stopped using it in 2005. It's n a closet somewhere. It still works (as far as I know), but due to the frayed cord, I would never donate it. The newer machines all seem to have detachable cords.
There are lots of people who can fix frayed cords for you. Many work at places that accept used items. Why leave it in a closet when it could be helping someone ?
If the machine works and it's old and I don't want it, I just put it on Craigslist and it's usually gone the same day. I moved across the country and when moving out I got rid of some oxygen cylinders and a concentrator that way. Some people will take stuff for "parts" even if non operable as a whole on eBay - list it in the condition it's in and you'd be surprised someone may take it.
I just got a new AirSense 10 and have been wondering about what to do with my old machines. I have two ResMed S9 CPAPs one of which I used constantly at home for about eight years and one which I used when travelling for the last five (and subsequently has a lot fewer hours of use). I've also got a spare humidifier ta and a lot of nose pillows (when I got the new machine I got switched to a nasal mask).
If you can donate an eight year old machine, do so. If you can donate masks that you can't use, do that too.
I suggest that you keep the travel machine as a spare and for travel.
