Apnea worse after nasal surgery?

Post by bluemoves » Fri May 03, 2019 8:32 pm

I had turbinite reduction and septum surgery on April 3rd. Prior to the surgery, my average events per hour was around .3 to .9. I rarely got above a 1. But since the surgery, my events per hour has been running as high as a 2, and last night it was 4.2. What's going on? I didn't expect the surgery to be a cure, but I didn't expect the apenea to be worse. BTW, I can't sleep at all without the mask. If I dare fall asleep without it, I wake up immediately because my airway is blocked. So I know the mask helps, but why is the apnea so much worse now?

Healing takes time.
You are only a month out.
Hopefully, your surgery has been successful, but if so, not yet.
Forum members rarely recommend these procedures, but good luck to you.

Yes, I think the surgery was a success. I'm healed. I didn't have the surgery to fix the apnea. The turbintes were so large that I had trouble breathing at night. Before the surgery, I would lay down and my nose would immediately become congested. Some of my earliest memories as a child where struggling to get my nose clear enough so I could sleep. So the surgery was great, but I didn't expect it to increase my apnea. I just can't figure out why it's worse.

Post your specs and a few graphs.

Now that your plumbing's been changed maybe your settings need to be dialed-in again.

How could we know or even take a wild guess? We have no idea what equipment you're using or what your settings are.
Please fill in your profile and give us some information to go on. Are you using software or getting your information from your LCD display?

Without knowing what your machine or settings are, I'm going to throw out a wild guess. If you're using an APAP in a range of pressures, it could be that you now have no precursor events (flow limitations or snoring) to signal the machine to raise the pressures.......and the (apnea/hypopnea) events occur without the machine being able to respond. Keep in mind that an APAP algorithm needs flow limitations and/or snores to trigger the pressure increases. If your surgery "fixed" your breathing, there are no events for the machine to trigger a pressure increase. APAP machines will not attempt to stop an apnea while it's in progress. It needs at least 10 seconds to be able to define what the event is.......hypopnea or apnea.
You NEED the software to see what's going on during the night to be able to optimize your settings.

Yes, that is wild.

Hope you are doing well, Den.
