Is bad Air leak score important if AHI Score is good?

Post by AdamsHouseCat » Tue Apr 16, 2019 12:08 pm

I am a New user of the Resmed Airsense 10

If my “My Air” score on the Resmed app is reflecting an average Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) score of approximately 1.0, may I be excused from being concerned with an average Leak score of 45L/Min?

As my nasal pillow mask fits just fine (I get a smiley face on the machine display), the leak is apparently due to my opening my mouth at some point. I have tried a full face mask, and that drops the leak to around 25/L Min, but my events actually seem to RISE to around 2.5, and I simply don’t like the full mask. I know some people use a chin strap or tape- but I am hoping to just to ignore the leak score so long as my AHI scores are good.

Am I good?

I'd say 'no', at 45LPM leak, the machine is going to have a lot of trouble determining what kinds of breathing events you're having.

Your AHI probably isn't too far off, but it's composition isn't going to be good and accurate.

CPAPs don't keep track of how deep of sleep you go into. A leak might interfere with your sleep or do other things that aren't necessarily going to be recorded by your machine. (Anything like dry your eyes / skin / etc.)

If your question was: "is it worth it to put in effort to get rid of leaks?" Then the answer is: Yes. :D

Here's an example below in a thread of mine.... of a night where I had an ugly 95% number...which is what the machine reports on screen and what MyAir will report.
I still got Mr Smiley though for overall mask seal because despite having a high leak at times....it was far from the whole night.
To know just how bad your leak is trending AND how long you are deep into large leak territory you need to be evaluating the leak graphs and not relying on the 95% numbers for worry or peace of mind.
Remember that 95% number only means where you were at OR BELOW for 95% of the night. It is NOT an overall average of where you spent the night.
