DME today. Any tips?

Post by kawi1234 » Wed Mar 13, 2019 5:17 am

Long story short...."Mild" sleep apnea, can't wait to feel better after 10+ years. All I know is the doctor said, "You have trouble breathing 9 times per hour." My O2 went down to 87%.

I don't know what machine I am getting. My biggest question is do I take what they give me? I kind of think an Auto machine seems like the best....

Thanks! (appt today at 1PM est)

Tips for DME visit?

Post by kawi1234 » Wed Mar 13, 2019 5:42 am

Recently diagnosed (mild). Doc says I have trouble breathing 9x per hour. Been tired a long time. Male, 200 pounds. ANy tips for going to get equipment? Not sure if they give you a specific machine or you get to have input on what machine you want (it seems the auto is best bet?)

Just don't want to get screwed! Thanks.

Also have mild apnea. My DME tries but are very disorganized and not always helpful. Ultimately they do come through but it takes lots of questions and calls. So be a self-advocate. Do some online research. Try as many masks as they'll let you and be sure to try any sizes/interchangeable frames or cushions that are available. Ask a ton of questions -- there are no stupid questions. Try laying down with the mask attached to the machine at the office. If you're having problems at home (aside from the inevitable difficulty of those first nights/weeks) don't hesitate to call and ask until you get the help you need. Do accept that i5 mqy g3 difficult/frustrating at first. Point is: persist! You will ultimately do well, and if you have a great DME, so much the better!
