Machine On & Off During Therapy

Post by jwoceanside » Fri Feb 15, 2019 5:41 am

Is there any problem with this example

Go to sleep at 10 PM
Wake at 1 AM
Turn machine off
Sit up for an hour or so or until tired once more
Turn machine on around 2 AM
Sleep until 6 AM
Turn machine off
Wait for results

Or is it better to leave the machine on during 1 AM and 2 AM while awake and up
I find it more beneficial, sleep wise, to spend that hour or so and up

Hi jwoceanside,

What you describe has the formal name of 'biphasic sleep'. And 400 years ago it was quite normal. People in England talked of having 'two sleeps' or 'first sleep' and 'second sleep'.

The issue isn't: is it 'normal' or not. It's: does it work for you?

As to your question. Seems to me you don't want the machine running for an hour while you're not wearing it. That just adds to the machine's hours for no benefit. 8)

Thanks for your timely response. I'm also wondering if turning the machine off for an hour will effect your next morning numbers

No...turning the machine off will not affect the next mornings numbers over the entire night or 24 hour reporting period.
Now it might affect what you see on the LCD screen as it often only reflects the most recent session but long term any numbers reported are based on a total of 24 hour reporting session that starts new each day at 12 PM noon per the machine's clock.
Naps taken in the afternoon with the machine being used are also factored into the overall numbers.
Doesn't matter how many on/off breaks in therapy might occur.

In fact if you use the machine and let it run for an hour or two and you aren't attached that won't affect the numbers either...because those hours get removed from the calculations as BND hours...breathing not detected hours.

So it really doesn't matter either way but there's no sense in running the machine for hours without you being attached. Wasted machine life hours IMHO.

If you're awake and up and puttering around, turn off the machine, if you're laying in bed reading or something, waiting to drop off... leave it running on your face, so you don't go to sleep without it.
