Reminder Alarm Available?

Hi Gang

I have an older Philips Respironics BI-PAP System One. I love the machine and the mask and also realize I suffer from severe apnea. Was curious if there was an option to set an alarm warning me that I've taken the Mask Off during the night? Because of illness sometimes I don't remember I've woken up then drift back to sleep without the mask on.

Be sure to catch some HAIR under the tape.
Silent alarm unless you holler.

It's in the manual:

Mask alert: on / off

Set it to "On" if you can't train yourself to leave it on.
Taking the mask off and shutting the machine off? NO, it don't work that way.
Train yourself to keep it on and put it back on before falling asleep.

While I do not recall ever having this problem (in almost 20 years), this sounds like something that should be built into the machines.

Yes its a GOOD feature which should be an option for people who suffer from SEVERE Apnea. I remember one time waking up in the middle of the night, inadvertently pulled the mask off, then a short time later could hardly catch my breath. (it was pretty scary).

We really don't know what is "severe!" They say AHI of 30 or more, but that's an arbitrary definition. Also, the AHI measure itself doesn't tell the whole story! Really anybody who uses a CPAP should have this option.

Yes, 141 is severe! However, many who have a lower AHI have episodes of much longer duration such that 141 of them would not fit into an hour!

This does not necessarily make their condition less severe in reality.

If you had 141.3 at the sleep study, what do you get when you use the CPAP machine?

this why i don't particularly care for labels like severe and moderate or mild. i think that if you have ANY form of sleep apnea, you get on a machine and get it treated. it just seems to me if someone says mild, they may not even bother with therapy. or if they are severe, it may scare them more than necessary.

My sleep study report said "very severe". It scared me so much in only took me a year to get a machine. If it had said mild, I probably would have never tried one.

Back to the topic, my machine has a large leak alarm. I imagine it would go off if I took my mask all the way off.
