Nose instantly blocks when mask on. How to set humidity?

Post by ethereal » Thu Dec 13, 2018 9:07 pm

Hi all,

I've had some absolutely horrid nights of sleep where I've felt like I am suffocating and I end up ripping the mask off. This is due to my nose blocking.

Basically I've been able to notice that it happens:
  • As soon as I put the mask on, my nose congests. I could be breathing perfectly seconds before.
  • When the weather changes... It's summer where I am but on a couple occasions the weather has suddenly gone from hot to cold.
The above might sound strange but that's what I've noticed. When the weather is warm, then it goes suddenly cold and potentially rains.

Last night I experimented with the humidity. First I turned it off and left the mask on for 15 minutes, and I think it made my nose worse. Then I turned it to ON, level 7 and within 20 minutes I was breathing well in my nose. Unfortunately I woke up due to massive rainout and water dripping into my mask (wtf?). Tube was at 27 degrees celcius and humidity was at 7.

How can I learn how to set the humidity vs the weather? Anyone have any pointers?

Resmed Autoset 10
7-10 pressure
USUALLY use Auto Climate/Tube/Humidifier and it seems to be fine, except when the weather changes drastically as outlined above?

Any tips welcomed because I really want to sleep tonight :D

You need to pick a humidity setting that your nose likes first and then you adjust the hose air temp for comfort and rain out prevention.

Read posts number 2 and 3 here for options to help with prevention condensation in the mask or hose.

When it turns off really cold...you are going to have to either turn up the heat in the bedroom or in the heated hose.
You have some room to turn the hose air temp up...that's what I would do first.
When it warms up a bit just turn the hose air temp down to whatever you are most comfortable with.

I do better with pretty much maximum humidity ...and I like a cold bedroom...so cold that maximum hose air temp still doesn't prevent condensation. You can add a hose cozy... or if your mask has a short hose from the long hose you might get a short hose cozy to help the air stay a bit warmer while it leaves the warm area of the heated hose making it's way to the mask.

Well that's the thing... the people at the CPAP clinic when I got my machine for trial could offer no useful information besides "use all auto settings". So when the weather seems decently warm, auto climate for tube and auto humidity seems pretty good.

Obviously that doesn't work out when the temp drops.

So general way to tackle the weather with the settings is:

Cold = more humidity and higher tube temp to combat the rain out
Warm = seems like I do okay on auto, but do the opposite of above.

Cheers, will read your tips post

We also need more information on what mask you have. Please fill out the equipment section of your profile.

For instance, with the P10 pillow you may need a hose cover for the mask's e posed tube and a barrel cozy for the mask, especially if rainout is especially bad.

The "auto" setting for humidity and hose air temp will work fine until the bedroom gets colder...been there and done that myself.
It's not perfect when ambient temps really cool off...like low 60s or below (Fah temps you will need to convert to Cel)
It just can't keep up for some reason or other.
That's when I go to manual settings. In the winter when my bedroom temps drop a lot. Old house...minimal insulation and the bedroom is just hard to heat. Window facing north and not sealed well kind of stuff. I actually like to sleep in the colder air myself and don't want to add a space heater or anything like that.

What I do is use the heated hose year round....same humidity setting (my nose likes lots of moisture and doesn't like it when I go changing the moisture) so I get same consistent humidity level all year and I only vary the hose air temp as needed. Warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
The heated hose has 2 functions in my book...obviously rain out prevention but also simply air temp comfort in general.
Cooler air in the summer feels good but not so good in the winter. I have had my nose get cold and the discomfort from the cold will wake me up and disturb my sleep. Don't like to have my sleep disturbed. It's already fragile enough.
