Full Face Mask Recommendations for Active Sleepers?

Post by FoggyGoggle » Tue Dec 11, 2018 2:52 pm

I am currently using the AirTouch F20 full face mask, but I am having some issues with the fit. I constantly change positions while sleeping and I like to sleep on my stomach or my side. This has the unfortunate side-effect of disturbing the seal on the mask and the resultant rush of air causes me to suddenly wake.

I tighten the mask, maybe over tighten, so it stays put no matter what position I'm in. While this doesn't cause discomfort, I wake up in the morning looking like a pro-wrestler pile-drove a spatula to my face. I've tried loosen the mask a bit, but when I do, it moves and causes leakage which causes me to wake up. My face is red most of the day and I wonder if I'll do long term damage.

I don't really want to wear the nasal masks as I have allergies which often prevent me from breathing out of my nose. Was anyone in a similar position? This is my second mask after I complained about the first one. I know mask selection can be a pain. My mask does work, but I really would rather not wake up looking like Satan bitch slapped me with a billy club. Any suggestions for a full face mask for active sleepers? Thanks!

Apparently I'm more of an active sleeper than I thought. I've been using a DreamWear Full Face mask for the last 3 weeks or so now and a chinstrap underneath it. This combination seems to work well for me keeping leaks manageable. My Dr gave me an AirTouch F20 to try for other reasons but after just 2 hours I had to switch back to my DreamWear due to too many leaks at the bridge of my nose which were blowing air into my eyes.

I probably have my DreamWear and chinstrap tighter than needed but it works for me. I do have some interesting hair styles from the chin strap and I'm sure I have some marks on my face in the morning. I tend to get up and shower right away so I don't normally see myself in the mirror for at least 15 minutes and by then the marks are almost gone. As far as how active I am at night, I've found myself waking up face down on my pillow, and frequently sleep on my sides. And my leaks are minimal.

I did have to cut out a small piece of the mask that was rubbing the bottom of my nose. If you look at it, it's where the nostril hole is, I can take pictures of it later if needed to explain better. Instead of having a hole for air to come in, now it's completely open.

I started with the Airfit F20 (memory foam) and could not get the leaks under control from moving around in my sleep. I tried everything, tighten all the straps to the point of being too tight. I shaved my beard that I've had for the last 10 years. I ended up switching to the resmed F30 mask and have had great success with my leak rate. my only issue which i assume is unrelated is that when I have sinus congestion i tend to take the mask off during the night.

A hose hanger might help as well. I second the thought of dealing with Padacheek for her advice, and what she feels would help. Many on the forum have dealt with Karen, AKA Padacheek, and have found her to be an honest ethical business person. I have purchased from her. I have no other connection than buying things from her. and I have chatted with her. She is a wonderful person.

For the lines on the face. I have found that by scrubbing my face in the morning with a cotton wash cloth. Then putting skin oil on my face helps. Perhaps the best skin oil is "Gold Bond Diabetics Dry Skin Relief." This is very thick and can be difficult to pump. It is more expensive than I can afford. So I use the number two choice, generic form of "Vaseline Intensive Care." Mostly I like to have the marks, and tell others how much my life has been improved by Sleep Apnea treatment. It is like I went from, "It can not be time to get up yet, I still feel tired." to "Wow, I have so many interesting things I can to do today." It is really like coming back to life.
