Tooth pain with Cpap after a filling

Post by MistRiver » Wed Dec 05, 2018 3:39 pm

I got a tooth filled a week ago. Starting a few days after that when I use my cpap for more than an hour, even with just a nasal mask, the tooth I had filled hurts very badly into the next day. I called the dentist and they are just giving me a verbal shrug. The tooth is fine if I don't use my mask, and way too painful to ignore if I do. This is causing me to not be compliant enough for insurance. Has anyone heard of this or had this problem?

You could use some of the moldable wax used to cover orthodontic wires
to cover the filling at night.
Temporary sensitivity is uncommon after dental work, but it can happen.

Have your dentist look for gum recession around the tooth that was filled. When I was a teenager I recalled having fillings done and then a few weeks later I’d have wicked tooth sensitivity out of nowhere. Cool air or warm drinks would set me off. Turned out that my severe gun recession combined with a newly filled tooth were contributing factors. I had a gum graft done to cover up my exposed roots and guess what? After three months of healing and gum regrowth/improved coverage no more sensitivities. I even had a gum graft as recently as last July when I developed tooth sensitivity to flossing and cold that it was a result of receded gums.

Have your dentist check it out.

And stop letting them blow you off.

There are some possible solutions depending on your exact problem. Your dentist really needs to help in this.

Possible solutions depend on the cause. Are you clenching while wearing the mask? Is the problem at the gum or where the filling was? If it has been sometime, was there root infection that was not apparent?

What I would discuss with dentist as options:
a) Flouride gel along the gums;
b) Rub sensodyne toothpaste on the tooth and don't rinse for at least 45 minutes. Repeat a few times a day for several days,
c) Oral gel or similar;
d) Bite guard or similar to physically block cold air from hitting the tooth
d) Upping the hose temp and humidifier.

You might have a little residul swelling from the work done. Try an Advil at bedtime to see if you get relief.
