Appetite decrease because of APAP?

Post by pathogen » Thu Nov 08, 2018 12:57 pm

Hi,

I've recently started using an APAP and I've noticed my appetite and cravings seem to have disappeared.

Now maybe that is just coincidental but I would be interested to know if others here have experienced something similar.

Thank you!

Boy, I wish that would happen to me...I always have something to eat in my hand.

It happened to me! :D

From the time I was very young I would get up at night, frequently several times a night, and raid the fridge. Sometimes it would be a glass of fruit juice, or a banana or ... horrors, a piece of candy. This continued year after year. I actually didn't eat very much at all during the day, and it was almost as if my body craved food at night. Weird and very mixed up. :?

That stopped immediately when I started using CPAP regularly, all night. CPAP, along with dietary modifications changed this long established habit. I strongly suspect the night eating was somehow connected to my SDB, but who knows? I am just so pleased not to be doing that anymore.

Same here. When I don't get enough quality sleep, my stomach is upset, and it feels like hunger pangs. So I would eat, but the pangs wouldn't go away. Once I got my PAP settings fine tuned, the "hunger pangs" stopped, and I was able to control my eating. I lost a lot of weight and have kept it off. Still need my PAP therapy, though.

Arlene's cravings (and very possibly those of others) all seem to be sugar related, as they might in pre-diabetes, or at least someone looking for more energy than they have and that's a definite sign of apnea, and quite likely the reason so many gain weight once apnea sets in, pre-diagnosis.

Thanks all!

Someone told that not getting enough sleep also kinda of leaves your body "stressed" all the time and that this causes a hormone called cortisol to be released which in turn helps to cause hunger.

You guys ever heard of that and/or think it is valid?

Thx

It is a mixing bowl full of things.
Untreated apnea stresses the entire body, including the brain.
Stress is very much related to overeating.

Interesting. I had not heard of cortisol, but it could explain what was happening to me. I get the same gnawing sensation in the pit of my stomach if I'm under a lot of stress, and not sleeping well can certainly increase one's stress level.

Not sure there's any science behind it, but I read this theory on here and it made sense to me. The sleep deprived body lacks energy, and desiring food can be a grasp for some energy. I still have a robust appetite, but then again, my sleep is still not optimal. But once my sleep improved, I gained a bit more self control and quit frying eggs at 3am.
