Heated tubing? Heated humidifier?

I think I have decided to go with a Resmed Airsense machine.
I would like some input as to heated tubing as opposed to not heated.
Heated humidifier??? Would you need one or the other but not both heated?
Can the heated tubing be disabled when not need? (in a humid country)

My prescription has 13 on it for pressure. The majority of people here say
to get the auto machine instead of the fixed. Can they set the pressure at
13 on an auto machine?

Hi Longjohn,

The heated humidifier adjusts the amount of humidity provided by adjusting the heat. The more heat the greater the evaporation, therefore more humidity.

The heated host has two purposes, comfort and possible rain-out reduction. About comfort, we all have different preferences regarding how warm the CPAP provided air.

Maiture in the air can often condense back into a liquid, should this occur with the CPAP provided air it can condense in the the tube. This disrupts the out therapy as it's uncomfortable and noisy.

The greater the humidity, and the cooler the tube, the greater the possibility of rain-out. You want to find a good compromise between comfort (temperature and humidity) without rainout.

The Airsense 10 Autoset can be used as a fixed pressure or variable pressure machine. The humidifier is included with all Airsense machines. The heated hose supplements the heated humidifier...it does not replace. The heated humidifier can be turned off if it is more comfortable.

The heated hose and humidifier can be used separately from each other if a person wishes.
You can warm the air if you wish without adding moisture if you wish.
You can add moisture and not warm the air if you wish.
Lots of options available...Get the heated hose. You can always turn it off if you don't want to warm the air but if you happen to need warm air for some reason or other that non heated hose can't do it.

In some parts of the world the machine can be supplied with a side panel no humidifier bin and a standard hose. I would ensure you get the humidifier bin and climateline heated hose for best flexibility

Just to be different, I do fine with the humidifier but no heated hose. Heated hose is probably convenient if you like high humidity and keep your bedroom quite cool. Otherwise, non heated hoses are simpler, cheaper, and use less power. Power savings is important if you ever run on batteries, but you can always use a heated hose with it turned off to save power or if you don't like or need it.

I have been using my Dreamstation since February with a standard hose. I have a brand new heated hose that I have never used and don't know if I would like or need it. I had no issues with a non-heated hose back in February when I started.

I suppose my only option is to hook the heated hose up and see if I like it or not. Can the heat be adjusted or is it just on or off?

If you are using the humidifier and want to try the Dream Station heated hose.....the hose air temp is adjustable.
Must use the humidifier though or else it won't heat because there's no way to get power to it.
Settings available 1 through 5 or 6 (I forget exactly) with 1 being barely warmer than your bedroom air and 5 or 6 being the warmest at 86 degrees F.

I just picked up a heated hose for my Dream Station the other day. $26 on Amazon seems like the original OEM real deal.

Anyway second night with the heated hose and it MIGHT be slightly more comfortable then just the humidifier alone. I think I have that set at 4 but would have to check.

Seems I am not as congested when I wake up. Probably bump up one or the other in a day or two and see. Did have some headaches last week in the morning that lasted most of the day.

Typically I am congested and hate warm air. I drive in the winter with my window cracked in the car. Keep the bedroom around 59-60 at night.

I don't really like warm air either and I also like a really cool bedroom with some nights the temps getting down to mid 50s.
Cold air up my nose in the winter doesn't feel so great and in fact it can cause discomfort and wake me up. I used to call it "ice cube nose syndrome". That was in addition to the condensation problem I always had with my preferred higher humidity settings.
So 2 reasons for me to use the heated hose.
When you use a heated hose you don't have to use really hot/warm air if you don't want to. All it needs to be is warm enough to prevent condensation and ice cube nose syndrome.

There is an additional plus to using the heated hose...greater consistency of delivery of whatever humidity setting someone prefers.
It's just more stable with less variations and more likely to keep the nasal mucosa happy no matter what the humidity setting.

Now some people may like a warmer house...my mom is one of those people...keeps the house thermostat at 75 during the winter. Drives me crazy but someone like that probably wouldn't need a heated hose to prevent condensation or ice cube nose syndrome because the air is already really warm.

I use a heated hose year round. Warmer in the winter and down to low temp setting in the summer...this way I address the comfort issues in terms of temp and condensation prevention but always have consistent humidity delivered. I don't vary the humidity settings. I learned a long time ago that my nasal mucosa don't like me screwing with the humidity. They like for me to leave it alone. With even a slight variation the nasal mucosa will rebel and give me some pretty nasty rhinitis symptoms.
Some people like a lot of moisture and some people like just a little...I happen to like as much as I can get and that's what keep my nose happy. Humidity preferences are highly individualized though so it's one area of therapy that each person has to figure out for themselves.

Luckily in 5+ years with my old machine I never had rainout happen. Figured for $26 if nothing else I have an overpriced backup hose.

I will keep playing around with the settings and see if I find a combo I like better then just a regular hose. If not no big deal.

Last winter, when I started, I didn't have a heated hose. I keep my house cool at night. I woke up with water spraying out of the vent on my mask. It was spraying all over by bedding. I keep my humidity up pretty high. I ordered a heated hose and a cover for my heated hose.

My brother got his first machine maybe two months ago. A Dream Station as well (not auto though) and after a few nights had rain out. He asked me about it and while I knew what he was talking about I had personally never experienced it. He backed the humidity down a number. I got my new Dream Station about a month ago and left the humidity low (3 I think). Wondering though if I need it higher and didn't want to have rain out. So I picked up the heated hose to mess with.
