Need FF Mask or Hybrid

Post by allend » Sat Feb 10, 2007 5:38 am

I got up at 4:00 AM because I couldn't breath through my nose. I am flat out exhausted. I even did a nasal/sinus irrigation and that didn't help either.

I have come to the realization I need a full face mask or a hybrid, especially for when I get a cold. It's probably a must for any papper to have a mouth breathing something available when you cannot get air through your nose.

My settings are 11/8 . I primarily sleep on my back but sometimes in the morning I roll over to my side and that's why I usally have leak issues but right now, I just can't breath. It's rarely this bad but it does happen. Otherwise I am just doing a little too much mouth breathing so the FF might help that too.

Thanks for your support,

Allen

Soyala Full Face hasn't been around long, but if it's anything like the Soyala, I'd vote for that personally.

Your poll has only been up for a few hours. There are hundreds of folks who have not yet had opportunity to see it, let alone respond. Life is too short to be impatient!

As for my suggestion, I use the one that best fits my face--in my case, the ResMed UMFF in medium (despite that the RT suggested the large fit better, the medium is more comfortable and leaks less).

I've tried the Respironics FF mask, and it would NOT seal for me. It obviously seals for some users, or it would not remain on the market.

Need FF Mask or Hybrid

Post by felineperson3 » Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:23 am

I really only use the Hybrid if I have a cold or severe nasal congestion and it does seems to do well for me. I have only tried one other full face type and that was the Mirage which I did not like. Regularly, I prefer the Breeze, Aura, or CL2 as I like the increased freedom without any pressure marks on my face the next morning.
Best wishes as you search for the right one for you as everyone is different and it often seems like a "cat and mouse" game to find the one that works best for you.

What is the purpose of your poll?

Trying to find most popular? ... go to CPAP.com and look at the sales chart. CPAP.com also has consumer reviews for most of their masks some of which may provide further useful information.

As for recommendations. Everyone has a different facial architecture and therefore every recommendation will be unique to the person recommending it … not much good to you unless you have the exact same facial features as everyone else.

Are you trying to determine the best FF for YOU? … You need to try them all to determine the best for you.

If your DME is unwilling to let you trial them all, CPAP.com offers return insurance specifically for such trialing. CPAP.com also has a mask sizing guide though it is not perfect.

I did not vote on your poll because I cannot honestly recommend an FF for you … nor can anyone else (especially since we have no idea what you look like or what features/options you prefer).

Perhaps you just want to know what the differences are between the masks … that may be more useful information than this poll.

Best of luck!

PS - As for the saline sinus rinse, it is more of a preventative measure than a cure. I started doing it last fall (thanks to great members here) and earlier this week I began to come down with cold symptoms. I started getting congested in the back of my throat with a bit of coughing but my sinuses never got stopped up. Today, the congestion is pretty much gone and I never lost a step in my PAP compliance or efficacy.

If you have 'chipmunk cheeks" and a small-to-medium size mouth,
the Hybrid may work for you. If you have a long, thin, face, and a
large mouth, I doubt if it will work for you.

So you are saying if a person has a fat face it should work well and if you have a thin face it won't? Darn...I was going to order one but I definitely fit the longer thinner face model.

I have a very long, narrow face and the hybrid works great for me! The fit on any mask seems to be quite an individual thing...

I have only been on CPAP for about 3 weeks, so, I may not be an expert. I use the Hybrid, and I will not try anything else. I like the option of choosing nasal or mouth breathing, and I have "in my space" issues. I don't like anything that is going to impair my vision or go between my eyes.

My brother and his wife have both been on CPAP for years. While I'm not sure what brand of mask they use, I know they both use full face masks and absolutely detest nasal pillows. My brother was very emphatic about that fact when I was diagnosed. He told me I shouldn't even try a mask that had nasal pillows.

I have 2 masks, a swift nasal pillow, and a Hybrid. I used the Swift for 3 nights, until I got my Hybrid. I have been compliant every night and my only problem is that my husband says he gets the cool exhaust on his skin when I turn over.

It is totally about personal choice, fit and comfort. I did my research on the Hybrid before I got my machine, and since the DME refused to order, or consider ordering it for me, I maxed out a credit card and paid full price for it. I think it was the best purchase I have ever made.

Three votes for the Soyala Full Face Mask? Who sells it and where is a picture of it? I understand they have a new ffm coming out but surely people wouldn't vote for something they have not even tried....would they?

And yes, it's the internet. I wouldn't be surprised at all if people voted for things they haven't tried.

TBone, (the spell checker almost changed your name to Debone, now that must be a painful operation), I hear you and everyone's face is different but f you get enough responses that should even out. Also, there may be some masks that lots of people really like. The problem is that not everyone answers. If everyone answered, then we'd get a good idea which masks are the best with which to begin testing.

Dream,

I know what you mean about the sinus lavage because this cold is so much less severe than the colds I usually have. I get them very bad. However, it was enough to make me mouth breath.

Can a DME put back a mask you tried and sell it as new? What does cpap.com do with the used masks.

My DME is leary about the ins co paying for another mask. Got my machine in the middle of Nov with the Activa, changed to a Resp Large Comfort Gel (as per DME's RT who never even did the sizing template on me) and I needed a Medium. So that's three from the middle of November, although, I am not sure if they charged the ins co for that first missized Comfort Gel. However, if the Dr. says there are times when I cannot breath through my nose and I need a FF mask, would the Ins Co, I have United Health Care which is very good, deny it.

My goal was to stay away from the masks that are no good for most people and try out those that most people say are the best. Too bad the RT's can't have a better sense of this.
