possible reason for clogged nasal passages?

Post by laprof » Fri Sep 07, 2018 2:22 pm

Good day! I was plagued by clogged nasal passages during CPAP use. Some nights it was so bad that I literally couldn't breathe and would have to get up and read a while (AND, use saline solution, of course). I noticed 2 nights in a row that I wasn't having that same problem and tried to figure out what I was doing differently - if anything. Well, every night I have a glass of either cashew "milk" or low fat milk... but I didn't have any for those 2 nights! Since then, I've stopped drinking either of them before bed and have not had any more breathing issues. Heaven knows why! I do know that milk products can create more phlegm in the throat, but now wonder about the nasal passages? Anyhow, this could be a complete fluke - or not. So, if you're drinking a "milk" product or milk before bed, try giving it up a couple nights to see what happens. Best.

Not sure what the cause is for you, I think there could be many, including allergies, etc.

I traditionally have bad allergies, so my routine is as follows:

1. Neti pot—clean the passages.
2. Flonaise spray
3. Loratadine (claritin)—10mg
4. Tea tree oil—sprinkled on the CPAP filter, and, if you're daring, a few drops in the CPAP's humidifier.

If local conditions (weather, etc) are more humid than usual you wouldn't need to use your humidifier, or possibly only at a low setting depending on where you are... and if you did use it, you could easily get congested and feel as if a cold was coming. Either than or you've suddenly developed new allergies!

what's the skinny on doing this.

I think somethign like this would help me, do you just get some essential oils and drop it on the filter? is there a brand or types of oil that people have better success with?

I would never put anything in the humidifier except water and nothing on the filter itself.
Now what I have done is put some essential oils on a cotton ball and set it next to the air intake.

As far as brand...I have use just about anything that I could find that smells good to me but you can start here if you wish.

Yeah, I'm sure noone would recommend it. However, if I don't do it, my passages close up. So, I do it. YMMV.

I just use a tea tree oil from any grocery store. I think as long as it's the pure oil you're ok. I drop a few drops on the filter as well as in the water.

I would recommend putting the oil on a cotton ball near the filter this achieves the same effect without risk
