Any Good Batteries to run CPAP during Power Outages?

Post by Gator5000e » Tue Aug 14, 2018 1:17 pm

Living down here in Central Florida, its just a matter of time until we lose power because of a storm. My condo actually lost power last evening due to a bad thunder storm but fortunately power was restored well before bedtime. So I am hoping for some suggestions on batteries or other power sources that could power my Dreamstation Auto CPAP. We are not allowed to have standard gas generators in my condo so those are out of the question. I have some CyberPower battery backups that I use for electronics but I doubt they would have enough power to run my APAP all night. Anyone know of anything that would work?

Thanks in advance.

There are a bunch of threads on this, but ultimately its a trade off of cost vs. portability.

AGM batteries which are large boat batteries have a lot of power for the least cost, but are large and heavy or you can go with a large lithium batteries. These are smaller/easier to charge but more expensive. I have both and at this point use the Lithium batteries because of the portability. I'm able to use them for camping with my son's scout troop or on long overnight flights ( as long as its a small enough lithium battery ). Also, the lithium battery was easier to charge as they charge with a laptop like charger rather than a big car charger.

I recently bought Medistorm Pilot 24 and Medistorm 24 Co-Pilot. This combination is not cheap. This was enough power for two days of camping. I've also owned batteries from competitors that worked fine. Its mostly about finding the right power/voltage for the machine you are trying to power. The Medistrom can be setup as an automatic power backup, route the charger to it, and then the battery to the machine and if power goes out, machine never stops. I've not done this, but its in their manuals.

Uh, not so much, agm batteries come in all sizes, mobility scooter batteries are preferred.

This is nonsense! Although you can certainly get a large AGM battery, you can also get them much smaller. A 7 amp-hour AGM is only a bit over 3 pounds and only cost $20. Certainly if your need is a red-eye flight, or climbing a mountain, an expensive lithium pack is worth it, but for home backup, or even car camping, an AGM battery is the most cost effective by a wide margin. For many users, a 35 AH is the best bet since it allows for finishing a night with full humidity, or going for 4 or 5 nights without humidity, and only costs $65. At 24 pounds you won't want to take it on a plane, but its easy to carry around the house. And the "big car charger" is also nonsense - a small 12v charger is about the same size as a laptop charger. But if you forget the charger, an AGM can be charged with any auto charger. Part of the beauty of the AGM system is that all the parts are generic - you can get several sizes of batteries and use the same charger, or you can use different chargers. You can even use an AGM to jump start a car!

I am lucky enough to have purchased a Goal Zero Escape grid- or solar-rechargeable battery from a Costco roadshow. I can get 2 nights at pressure 12 without humidifier which is fine for the Atlanta area. Only used it a few times for a single night. Super easy for this electrical dummy: disconnect humidifier, plug my ResMed APAP connector into the battery, maskup and press On.

What I also have is a alarmable oximeter for days a power outage goes on for days and the solar panels aren't sufficiently recharging the battery. I can set it so if my saturated oxygen levels drop to the set value (say 88%), the alarm goes off. While I might have fragmented sleep, I will not have the oxygen level drops that are potentially dangerous. Worth investigating, just in case.

Why not just turn it off instead of going to the trouble to disconnect it?

Good point, just as effective.

I'd like to know, is it possible to reload that solar-rechargeable battery during the day so that it's all ready when you go to sleep in the evening? It would be pretty much a fool-proof way to get your breathing machine working in any situation if it's possible.

Even more effective is a battery big enough to finish the night with the humidifier. The Escape, I think, has a 14 Amp-hour battery, which would last several hours with a humidity. With a bigger battery, you could go the whole night without worrying. Yes, it true, it is simpler and has more attractive design.

I have a small gas powered generator made by Yamaha that is really quiet considering. If need be I can set it on my patio and run an extension cable into my bedroom. I have used it before with great success. I am also looking into adding a large permanent generator system that will feed a single outlet in my bedroom.

Recently I picked up a large battery pack off of Amazon along with a solar charging panel for it. This is more for camping or emergencies where I have to leave my home. I used it one night to test it out and is lasted about 7 1/2 hours. If I buy a power adapter for my CPAP machine the battery is supposed to last much longer.
