Blood every time I blow my nose

Post by fishmaycraft » Wed Feb 07, 2007 7:51 am

Well, I've only been on this thing 5 nights now (with horrible sleep mind you) and everytime I blow my nose now I get lots of blood, some dried and some not quite dried. Any ideas?

Try turning your humidifier up. It sounds like the nasal passages are just too dry. You might also try some saline nasal spray to help keep those nasal passages moist. Use it during the day also for a while. Ayr gel can be put on a qtip and swabbed in the nose but the spray will get all the way in there.
If a higher HH setting causes rainout, get a hose cover (you can pm Offerocker about them) or an Aussie heated hose.

Sorry to hear of your problem. Easiest solution is to just not blow your nose! But all kidding aside, Brenda had a pretty good list of suggestions for you. Main thing is to stay moist and lubricated.

I had the same problem getting use to cpap, but after about a month it stopped all together, use the AYR gel, before going to sleep, and saline washes durring the day, and hope that works for you.

Hi FMC,

As Brenda and Sleepy-eyes said, turning up the heat adjustment on the humidifier sounds like the best first step.

However, I see from your equipment profile that you are using a resmed integrated heated humidifier. This may not be the case with your H3i humidifier, but when I used two different H2i humidifiers they did not put out anywhere near as much heated humidification even when turned up all the way as other humidifiers (Respironics' integrated and the F&P HC 150 standalone heated humidifier) seem to do at their halfway marks.

If you haven't yet turned up the heat on your H3i humidifier, do try that. If you've already done that, or if turning up the heat doesn't ease your problem, you might want to think about getting the Fisher & Paykel HC 150 heated humidifier to use instead of the integrated H3i.

Or, perhaps see if your DME will swap the whole resmed system you have for a Respironics cpap with heated humidifier.
