A bit off-tipic: Need help with O2 Homefill system

Post by TooGroggy » Thu Jun 21, 2018 12:41 am

I have searched online but can't seem to find the CPAPTalk equivalent for oxygen users. So, I hope someone here can refer me to somewhere where I might find the answers I am looking for.

I am helping an acquaintance who is getting a used Invacare concentrator and Homefill system. She is only getting one Invacare oxygen bottle with the system and would like to use the several standard oxygen bottles she already has. From what I have read online, the Homefill unit uses a proprietary valve (and thus proprietary/expensive bottles) but some sort of adapter can be used to connect it to standard bottles. My understanding is that such adapters can cost as much as $200 which is a lot more than this person is able to spend.

I am guessing that it is possible to build one of these adapters more affordably. But I need help identifying the right valves, hoses, gauges and other parts I may need. Has anyone done this or know someone who has? I would very much appreciate any directions you can give me. Thank you.

Bump.
Several oxygen users are on this forum.
One should see your question shortly.

The problem will be finding someone to help, most people are is such poor health they may not be able to master the work side of filling tanks. Not to say the cost of the unit. Jim

I am sure that is partly the reason there is so little information online about this modification and about using oxygen, in general. in fact, I just thought of trying http://copdtalk.com and guess what, it redirected me to cpaptalk.com. So, it appears I have posted in the right place after all. Let's hope that some O2 user on this site sees my post as chunky froggy suggested :)

But to your point, the person I am helping plans to use the oxygen for several of the old dogs in her dog rescue network. Apparently, many old dogs have heart and other conditions that are treated with oxygen therapy. She'll be filling the bottles herself and distributing them to the foster "parents" to use. Thus, the need to be able to use inexpensive tanks.

Since the intended use is for animals, rather than humans,
it might be possible to enlist the service of a machinist to make an adaptor.
I would never advise this for human use, but for the doggies, possible, but risky.
Edit: better to seek out a supplier.

There is danger involved, 1500 to 2,000 PSI of Anything is dangerous, add to it O2 is flame supporting big time, and lowers the ign point of fuels. It's not designed to be used with homemade solutions. Their is a liability issue here. Jim

Deleted, because a source has been noted.

If I understand your question correctly, I did a quick search and found this:

http://www.deltaoxygensolutions.com/id97.html

That may be what you are looking for.

Another site: (possibly less expensive)

https://saltcityglass.com/products/homefill-whip-2/

Thank you for the links. The adapter on the Delta site is exactly what I need. But the $345 (plus shipping) price is what I am trying to avoid.

Fortunately, Salt City Glass has a viable alternative. I spoke with Robert, the owner of that business who explained that I needed to go from a Homefill valve to CGA 870 (CGA 540 is used for industrial applications such as welding). He pointed me to his eBay store where he sells all the parts needed and offered to answer any questions I may have. Robert was very helpful and suggested I use the valve from the Homefill tank I have to reduce the cost of the adapter.

For anyone who may need to do this, here is what I think is needed:
  1. Homefill check valve (or is it a nipple?), from a Homefill tank
  2. Gasket for above (to replace the one that was used on the tank)
  3. Adapter with female Homefill thread (don't know what that is yet) to 1/4" male NPT
  4. Stainless steel braided hose with 1/4" female NPT ends
  5. Street-tee with 1/4" male NPT at one end, 1/4" female NPT at the other end and 1/4" female on top (or a standard tee and whatever male-to-male or female-to-female fittings may be needed to make things fit)
  6. Gauge with 1/4" male NPT
  7. CGA 870 yoke with 1/4" male NPT
  8. Thread tape
All of the above need to be rated for oxygen use at a minimum pressure of 3000 psi.

If anyone is interested, I'll report back when things are working.

I am glad I somehow pointed you in the proper direction.

I do not use oxygen but am a dog lover as well.
