A colleague has the CPAP and was telling me about this portable one he has that he brings with him on vacations. Can you tell me how does that work? Is it as effective, strong enough? Do you set the machine air level on your own or do you need to bring it in to a specialist to do it prior to using it? Is this something worth getting as a back up someday?
And... what is the difference of a BIPAP vs CPAP? I looked up the definitions online, but how is it determined what is the best for a person?

Re: portable machine
Welcome to CPAPTalk.
What model of machine and mask are you currently using? Different vendors use different algorithms. It is generally best to stay with the same machine vendor for best results.
Are you looking for something battery powered?
Without additional information your question is too general to answer intelligently. Sorry.

Re: portable machine
All machines are portable...they come with a carrying case. If you are talking about specfic compact travel machines, they are noisey and most do not have humidity.. In most cases the machine is prescribed by a doctor. A sleep test will determing your pressure and machine needs. A bipap is for people who need pressure above what a normal CPAP can provide.

Newtocpap... please stay with one thread so we can follow your story and not lose track of what's already been gone over.
Re: portable machine
I take my regular machine, as I need the humidification and like the heated hose.
If you're in the compliance period, you'll need to take your "regular" machine for obvious reasons. If you travel outside the country, the data will "catch up" when you get back home.
Note that most CPAP machines can run on house (or hotel) current in any country. You will need to make sure that this applies to your machine. You might need an adapter for the shape of the plug, but not a voltage converter.
