Side sleeping aerophagia

Post by MoodyMolly » Sat May 12, 2018 9:26 am

I have this odd conundrum that I'd like to figure out. Whenever I sleep on my side, I get bad aerophagia, I wake up on my side, with stomach pain and gas. But I don't get it when I sleep on my back. My theory is that I'm less prone to apneas while on my side than back, and my lowest pressure is too high for when I'm on my side because my throat is already mostly open. So I swallow air instead of breathe it. ?? Would that be a possibility? Would lowering my pressure help, or would it interfere too much with the machines ability to keep my airway open when I'm on back?

Try the other side... it actually can make a difference.

When you sleep on your side, make sure the intake of the stomach needs to be higher than the lower stomach.

If your mouth opens with XPAP you need to tape or use a FF Mask. Jim

The pressure you need is one that keeps your airway open when it closes any less and no treatment same with air escaping your mouth. The air pressure must be high enough to hold your airway open, and to work it must be in your airway.
Use data to optimize your xPAP treatment!

Hi MoodyMollly,
I am experiencing the exact same frustrating issue that you described in your above referenced post, and I’m writing to see if you have found a way to resolve it in the past year since you posted?

Like you, I’m totally fine on my back, but I immediately swallow air like crazy even if I only lie on my side (either side is the same). It feels almost like a river of air going directly into my stomach, I can even hear it moving down within 5 minutes of turning to my side. I am able to sleep on my back, and can probably train myself to do it all the time, but it’s not great for my spinal discs which have a tendency to slip. My pressure setting is now 7-12, with 95% spent at about 11, so I can’t lower it any more. I have set EPR at 2, and the air still streams down my esophagus at the end of an exhalation and beginning of inhalation, jarring me awake. I will try EPR 3 tonight, but I notice that the higher I turn the EPR, the more tendency I have for obstructive events and hypopneas.

Did you ever learn what caused this for you? I’m crossing my fingers that you found a solution that worked for you so that I can try it!
Thanks in advance for your input.

Addendum: I forgot to mention that I sleep with taped mouth and elevated head

MoodyMolly was last here in October 2018. Why not start you own therapy thread post some charts so we can see what’s going on and maybe help you. Rather than posting on a long dead thread
